Need to Impress a Friend Next Monday-- San Diego

El Chevere Apr 2, 2008 02:00 PM

Criteria: Good food, ambience, fairly lively (yes, I realize it's a Monday)....was thinking of downtown between Oceanaire, Blue Point, and Island Prime....if you had to pick from these 3, which one...if others, within a 10-15 minute drive from downtown, which one?

Just had happy hour today at Island Prime and though the view and the cocktail are always good, the mussels and ahi poke were below average..had a very fishy smell.
I do love the 5 and 5 for drinks and app's but I wonder if I am penalized from ordering on the hh menu?
    Oceanaire..that's the place!
Deck of the Fish Market but just app's/drinks..

Mr A's closed next Monday--big anesthesioloigist convention in town......plans have changed and now it's just drinks after dinner--Mr A's would definitely have been my choice....any other great suggestions with views...deck of Island Prime?...anywhere else?

        For dinner or for drinks?

If you aren't eating why not one of the hotel "view" bars? Since it is a Monday you won't have to deal with trendy crowds and the Ivy, Solamar, and even Altitude might be great. I really cannot get behind Island Prime as the food I tried was fairly poor but I suppose it has a nice view...
Unfortunatly, the new cocktail revolution hasn't really hit San Diego yet but if interesting well made cocktails or drinks are what you want only George's California modern has the both view and the well made cocktails.

If you just want drinks, I would suggest the bar at the hotel W then Altitude. There are a lot of famous people that go to the Ivy roof top, for example sug knight was there two weeks ago. But it is pretty expensive and I’m not fan of that place at all.

I'd go Oceanaire > Island Prime > Blue Point. Oceanaire has the best food and the best atmosphere while Island Prime has the best view. I've been to Blue Point twice and was never overly impressed; it's fine but nothing special.

I would have to agree with DougOLis. Out of those three Oceanaire, in my opinion, would be the best. Bertrand at Mister A’s is also worth checking out. It has a great roof top view of the city.

I'd probably do Island Prime. If it's a nice night, you could sit outdoors.

The view from the patio at Island Prime is one of the best in the city, but the food's just "pretty good." For another great view, consider Bertrand's Mr. A's. Food wise, Oceanaire is probably your best bet. Blue Point is good and people love it, but I've never been blown away while eating there. Candidly, the seafood at The Fish Market is better.
