Big Chile Republic is awesome (Colchester, VT)

We just got back from lunch at Big Chile Republic in Colchester, and all I can say is WOW! It's a pretty unassuming location, but the food was spot-on. Battered fish tacos were perfectly crispy and full of flavor, with a smoked lemon mayonnaise and crunchy slaw on top. We were bowled over by the cauliflower cakes in curry sauce - the seasoning was just perfect, salty and savory. My boyfriend, who isn't usually "into food," was exclaiming the whole time about how delicious everything was. Generous portions and upscale presentation for a very good price - we'll definitely be back!

  1. Thanks for the recommendation. We'll be up that way to go to Costco Saturday week, so we'll give it a try! Looks wonderful. :)

    1. Went there this weekend. I didn't get wowed like the OP. I had a pulled pork wrap, my husband had the adobo chicken wrap. They were really huge, good portions. The greens that were served with them were yummy and fresh, nice and crisp with a light vinegar/oil dressing. The size of the wraps was due to a huge amount of rice in the filling. The amount of pork in there was relatively small. Nothing we had was particularly spicy (would have expected it to be much spicier, given the name of the place).

It was good, I enjoyed the meal and I don' t feel cheated or over charged, but I wouldn't have called it "wow". :) I'm willing to bet some of the other things on the menu have more wow factor to them. :)

It certainly could be that we "ordered right" - the waitress did comment that we picked out the two most popular items on the menu! I sent my MIL there for lunch the other day and she also enjoyed the salad and soup (there's no way she could tolerate any kind of spicy, so it's probably a good thing there wasn't much heat). I guess we'll just have to go back and try some different dishes - you know, for scientific purposes.

That's it? That's all you have to say? Can't you expound on your experience a bit? I'm starting to suspect it matters what you order there.

Oh well I stand corrected then ;)

          2. I haven't made it up there yet, but looking forward to the more diverse choices we seem to be getting. Thanks for the feedback.

            1. I've had incredibly good food there also. The fish taco is their best deal, IMO.

I was less than impressed with the service however. Everyone was very nice, but seemed aloof about the art of serving, which can take away from the experience.

              Next time, I'll do take-out.

              1. I was so disappointed to see in this week's 7 Days that the restaurant has closed! Does anyone know what happened?

That explains why their 3 phone lines just ring and ring and ring. At first I thought it was another sign of their bad service (or unannounced vacation). The food was awesome and well worth the aloof nature of service. I will miss their fish tacos...

Why do their 3 phone lines still ring and their website is still functional? Strange.
