place to eat, discuss and write
I am looking for a quiet place that has good food and is a place that one can linger and do some writing. Prefer someplace on the UWS or Midtown West, but am open. I don't care if there is waiter service or not, but must be good food. Preferably good sandwiches, salads or Italian. No asian.
Thanks

Since you said you only prefer those two nabes, I take it you are willing to go elsewhere. So, I'm going to suggest AQ Cafe, in the Scandanavian House. on Park Av., b/t 37th & 38th Sts. Aquavit's chef, Marcus Samuelsson, is responsible for the very tasty menu of sandwiches, salads, etc. (Love the Swedish meatballs!) It's a cafeteria-style set-up with lots of tables in the large, pleasant lobby, where you can sit for as long as you like. I believe the hours are 10 a.m. - 5. p.m., Mon. - Sat.

It's a little further south than Midtown West, but the Half King on West 23rd Street and 10th Avenue is great -- known as a literary bar: http://thehalfking.com/index.html.
