I'll be in NO for a food convention in two weeks. I'm looking mostly for restaurants in the French quarter. What are locals favorite restaurants? What do you recommend?

For a quiet, casual dinner I like Orleans Grapevine - small menu, good wine list, nice atmosphere. Or go to Arnaud's for a bowl of gumbo and shrimp romelaud - classic!

Arnaud's yes. Shrimp remoulade and stuffed mushrooms are fantastic. You can step out onto the balcony for a nice view or visit the museum in the restaurant.

Irene's (resv. a must). We like the front room. Cafe Giovanni (W-F- Sat. for singers). We only order the chef's "feed me". Both of these are NOLA Italian. Herbsaint, August, Cuvee, La Boca... while not in the FQ are nearby (CBD) and are some of our best.

        what kind of food convention?

I like 1179 which is near the Quarter. A very short cab ride anyway. Also, try EAT on Dumaine & Dauphine. BYOB.

Thanks for the ideas. It's great to have some suggestions that aren't in all the guide books.
