Plate lunch recommendations Kailua-area, Oahu

SarahT2 Apr 1, 2008 05:14 PM

We'll be staying in the Kailua/Lanikai area of Oahu in late June. Can anyone recommend some plate lunch restaurants? Thank you!

There is a new place Uahi Grill on Uluniu St. that always smells good and has a good
list of specials on their board outside with reasonable prices.

I love Keneke's but try to avoid it or else I'd eat way too much! Love their Kalua pork plate and the gisantes too.

My Kailua friends and I frequent Fatboys for plate lunch. Its across the street from Starbucks. Here's a link to "Our Kailua Town" that highlights a number of Kailua eateries:

Times Super Market across from the Starbucks serves dinner-time plate lunches on Wednesday, Thurs and Fridays which are very popular. The India Cafe lunch wagon parked close to the post office has been getting rave reviews.

This place has gotten a lot of good comments from people over on the Windward side: http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/art....

Hope it pastes correctly this time. If not it is Dean's Drive In, located in Kaneohe, 45-773 Kamehameha Highway, Ph. 247-1300. http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/art...

Kind of dumpy but very popular locally is Keneke's in Waimanalo. Right on the road on the makai (ocean) side.

Our favorite budget eats in the Kailua area are Saigon Noodle House in Enchanted Lake, Ba Le (the Vietnamese chain) in town next to Don Quijote (the former Daiea) and Teddy's Better Burgers. Another local favorite is the Big City Diner in Kailua, a buffed up version of a coffee shop with casual food and a full bar.

If you're around on a Thursday night, check out the farmer's market in the parking structure behind Long's. At least a couple of local food purveyors will be selling very interesting mixed plates of everything from shrimp truck style garlic shrimp to the favorite Egyptian baked Chicken from Da Spot.

Dean's is our favorite gourmet plate lunch on Oahu. Our favorites are the ahi cakes, beef teriyaki and pulehu rack of lamb. The beef teriyaki are sliced grilled steaks, not the thin cut beef slices you get in other places.

I live just around the corner from Dean's, but only started going recently. It is really, really good. It's the only plate lunch place I actually recommend, rather than just saying "eh, not bad".
