Generally speaking, expats of respective nations will gather at a local eatery/bar for the matches (logically, Poles at a Polish restaurant or bar,...Brazilians at a popular Brazilian restaurant, etc.) Given this, Where do you suppose I can find, say, the Turkish, Cameroon, Brazilian, Uruguay, South African, Senegal, Polish, Croatian, Saudi, Tunisian communities watching matches in Los Angeles? Is there truly an authentically 'Uruguan' joint where one can whoop it up with Uruguan nationals over Uruguan cuisine/beer? Cameroon?

Given the fact that the starting time for most games will translate here into anywhere between 1:30 AM and 4 AM, there probably will not be a whole lot of places open.

try the Cock and Bull pub on Lincoln near Ocean in SM. I'll be there Saturday night for the 10:30pm Argentina/Nigeria, 12:30am South Africa/Paraguay, and the 2:30am England/Sweden - there may be a cover for the England match (the bar will be packed by then) but it will include breakfast - I can't speak to the quality of the food or whether they'll keep the taps flowing past 2am (can you imagine a room full of sober Brits watching England play in the World Cup? i can't), but the atmosphere should be great.

I'm so glad you asked this question. Grand Casino, the wonderful Argentinian bakery in Culver City, will be open at 4:30am for many of the matches. (To quote the counter person, "I'm not sure if people are gonna come, but we're gonna be open.") Judging by the typical clientele -- 75% foreign born, I'd estimate -- I think there should be a decent group. No alcohol, just great coffee and pastries. I'd call ahead to confirm, and also, I'm not too sure about the size of their tv...

I for one will be watching the Argentina-England game here. At 4am. What fun! It *is* a Friday. If any 'hounds are as masochistic as I am...well, I'll be the one in the white England hat trying to keep a low profile.

Dear Echo_Park, Jeff Pillet-Shore and Other Chowhounds -

I was so inspired by your post I've dedicated this month to watching as many WC matches as possible. At the appropriate expat site. France-Denmark was viewed at La Brasserie (Wilshire and San Vicente, a tres Parisian sort of place with solid food and slightly weathered yet glam ambiance - a beloved recent find of mine)...I have never seen so many disappointed Frenchmen under one roof. Le sigh. Taking the edge off was a lovely new taste sensation - new for me; I'm sure this is old hat to many of you - Fischer Biere d'Alsace. Mmmmmm.

Last night I watched the Brits take on Nigeria at The Cock & Bull in Santa Monice (Lincoln). Crowded and a mere 6 out of 10 score on the hooligan scale, but for the $10 cover you got some sort of god-awful beef on a stale bun which looked neither British nor edible.(Hold the jokes, please.) On the upside, I haven't had a good pint in a while and the football chants were easy to follow.

I have tried in vain to find an Italian place to watch the Italy-Mexico game tomorrow morning. Looks like that one might happen from bed with a cup of espresso...hey, that's amore.

(And as promised I got up at 4am to watch England play Argentina at Le Gran Casino in Culver City - ole! What a find. Amazing pastries. Fabulous cafe con leche. Great neighborhood-y place.)

If anyone out there has any ideas for future eating and footballing please let me know!

$10 cover at the Cock & Bull? I watched the match at the Cat & Fiddle with no cover, a roomful of extremely boisterous expats (although a pall set in after a while of no scoring).

We figured there's got to be plenty of Mexican places to watch the Italy/Mexico match. I'd be interested to hear more about the next few weeks of games and places to watch them.

Lucky Baldwin's in Pasadena on Raymond (south of Colorado). The place has been a party every night. Great food, good beers and much less hostile company than you will find on the westside.
