Village Grill Richmond/VA Diner

I couldn't decide whether to post here or on the Food Media Board but I saw both these places on Diners, Drive Ins (Fieri's show) up late at night grading papers the last few nights and wondered if either were any good. I've been looking for the nothing fancy but actually homemade stuff. Neither were the best looking places I've seen on the show - but they're close! Thanks!

  1. Do you mean The Village Cafe? I saw the episode with the Virginia Diner...the biscuits looked good. Haven't been to the Village Cafe for years...that's what being across the street from Edo's will do for you.

The Village Cafe was a Saturday lunch standard when I was a pre-teen. My brother took me to lunch and a movie every Sat. and the Village (along with Joe's on Strawberry St and the former Julian's) was one of our go-to places. Watched the show last night...those onion rings and calzones/pizza/strombolis looked very good.

agreed. not my personal top food types but they did look good.

"...been looking for the nothing fancy but homemade stuff." Might try Paradise Cafe (Diner?) in the Stratford Hills shopping center off of Forest Hill Ave south of the river. They are open from about 6:30 to 3:00 every day, serving only breakfast and lunch. About 1/2 mile west on Forest Hill is Liberty Valance. Also pretty decent. Nothing fancy, but a few homemade dishes.

forgot about the latter. heard it's kitschy but kids think it's fun - an issue for me. tried to go once but they were closed and forgot all about it. thanks. as i've been here longer things are seeming less far away. :)

IMO Liberty Valance is 'okay' if you are in the area and need breakfast. I wouldn't go there otherwise.

    2. They obviously like to film a bunch in one spot when they are in a town! Dot's Back Inn was on today. Looked fabulous. Will definitely have to make a trek there.
