IL COLOSSEO--Norfolk, VA--Wonderful!

We tried Il Colosseo last night. It is on Granby (former location of Blue Hippo)…a bit off the beaten path from most downtown restaurants. When we walked in, there were very few people in the restaurant (which turned us off a bit), but we are thrilled that we took the chance and stayed. All of the employees were speaking Italian and they began to almost serenade us. They are a bit disorganized, but I attribute this to the fact that they are still very new (opened in late January I believe). They brought us some wonderful bruschetta—on the house! It was very good. When my husband asked about the polenta, the chef (yes, the chef came out to explain) said that it was difficult to put into words, so he made some and brought it out for my husband to try (on the house, of course). YUM! Based on that, we both ordered dishes that included polenta. My husband had Chicken parmesan and I had another chicken entrée (Pollo Sophia), which was a smorgasbord of chicken, vegetables (peppers, onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, etc.), sauce, pasta, and polenta. It was extremely authentic and flavorful. Between the “free” food and entrees, we were extremely full and just thrilled and impressed at how great and flavorful the food was. After we got our check, they told us “don’t leave yet.” They then brought us a dessert on the house! This may have been the best part of the meal! I’m not sure what it was called (I couldn’t even look at the dessert menu because I was so stuffed) but I think it was their signature dessert—it was like a combination of custard and cheesecake. Beautiful presentation and oh so good! I am a dessert person and this was the best dessert I’ve had in a long time (and it wasn’t even chocolate!!). I highly recommend everyone give this restaurant a try. It is, by far, the best Italian in the area. Certainly better than La Bella Italia and Sirena Cucina, which have never impressed me.

Just back from Italy where, despite copious research, I was not blown away by a single meal. I know I've had better Italian than I had in Italy at the now defunct Foxhunter in Lanexa, VA, so I'm eager to try Il Colosseo. Will have to wait a bit though since we are a bit Italianed out.
