What's with the bread?

I've lived in the Baltimore area for 5 years now and every time I find myself in the mood for a hero sandwich on italian bread I come away disappointed. Do the folks here really think that the bread is supposed to have the consistency of Wonder bread?
A hero should be crusty on the outside, somewhat dense on the inside and be able to stand up to the sauce from meatballs for example rather than sopping it up like a sponge.
And yes, I've been to Dipasquales where the bread is actually quite good. On the other hand it's not always convenient to visit there from my home in Baltimore County.
Any suggestions?

  1. Michael.. I'm with you, Buddy! Most of the sub rolls are gooshy on the outside and chewy on the inside. The one place I remember that had authentic Italian rolls was Harley's. And they are defunct. There was a place in Carroll County, Finksburg, I think called "Stubby's". I haven't been there for a while but I remember the rolls were really good. If anyone has an answer let us know!!!
