Commander's Palace -- 3/22/08

CP is another of our regular stops when in New Orleans. A recent discussion on this board debated the relative merits of lunch, brunch and dinner at this classic restaurant. For us it has always been a brunch place and this time it was the Saturday Jazz Brunch. Brunch at CP consists of three courses with multiple selections for each course. Price is based on the selected entree.

Our appetizers were Crisp Romaine Salad with Parmesan, presssed eggs, hardwood bacon and black pepper-buttermilk dressing, Wild Gulf Shrimp Remoulade "Moderne" with Tabasco infused shrimp mousse, Shrimp and Tasso Henican with Crystal hot sauce beurre blanc, pickled okra and five pepper jelly and Classic Eggs Sardou, a soft poached egg on an artichoke bottom over creamed spinach with Creole hollandaise. All were good, but the Shrimp and Tasso Henican was superb and by far the best of the bunch.

Entrees were Bourbon Lacquered Quail, Griddle Seared Gulf Fish, Pecan Crusted Gulf Fish and Louisiana Sportsman's Brunch (a poached duck's egg and slow braised duck debris over roasted pecan griddle cakes with Muscadine preserves and duck fat hollandaise). Our favorites were the quail and the pecan crusted fish. The quail was stuffed with Louisiana Blue Crab and cornbread and served with Creole choucroute, cranberry-Grand Marnier syrup and Knob Creek Bourbon-sugar cane lacquer. The pecan crusted fish was drum with jumbo lump crabmeat poached in champagne and topped with crushed corn sauce and spiced pecans.

Because of the amount of food in the first two courses, desserts are close to overkill. But we soldiered on and had them anyway. The Creole Bread Pudding Souffle with whiskey sauce is a CP classic. Jack Daniels Dark Chocolate Torte is rich and so, so chocolat-y! Pecan Pie a la Mode was wonderful. But, the clear winner was Creole Cream Cheese Cheesecake, a huge slice of light be incredibly rich creamy delight. Oh, so good.

We always ask for and are accomodated with seating in the upstairs Garden Room. The jazz trio, the balloons on each chair and the large, open room make brunch at CP one of the classic New Orleans experiences.

    I didn't realize CP had Brunch on Saturdays.

      Had lunch there recently and it was outstanding. Its better than ever. I could eat there nearly every day.

        What did you eat for lunch? I'm considering doing lunch when I visit during my trip in May.

          We had an amuse, but I can't recall what it was. I think it was some onion confit with goat cheese on a bit of toast with homemade creole mustard.

          Apps were seafood gumbo, turtle soup, and the crispy romaine salad. Entrees were the shrimp henican (entree size), boneless beef shortribs, fried oyster salad, and a laquered grilled drum with grilled vegetables. I can't recall all the details. Desserts were the strawberry shortcake and bread pudding. I think we had another app as well, but I've gone blank right now. All of the food was outstanding, service was great and we really like the renovations. We were there on a Monday and the downstairs dining room was full. We noticed them bringing other diners upstairs. We didn't leave until 2 and the main dining room was 3/4 full still. This was not a busy tourist week, so we were surprised by the crowd. I highly recommend lunch there.

            I went for lunch a few months back and had a really great experience. I ordered a special mixed grill that had pork, rabbit, lobster boudin and beef, and was really delicious... it came basically as a big pile of fantastically flavorful meat, I was very impressed. It probably isn't available all the time but it was great. Friends had pork loin over sweet potatoes and garlic and black pepper shrimp over brie-whipped grits, all were quite good. Everything else we ordered was appetizers, which were good too.
