PHX: Urban Campfire is still open

I had them remove other thread. Contrary to multiple press reports, since retracted, Urban Campfire still burns.

Sorry for the confusion.

Drove past today after leaving asu and saw they are closed for remodeling until August 8th, so there might be some changes in store.

They closed several weeks ago for the summer to do some renovations. I think there might have been a separate thread on it. I think he's going to redo the front patio area and possibly paint and put up a new sign on the building.

I go by here on the bus a few times a week..looks like yes, they are ripping up the front patio/parking lot area for some kind of renovation. This sign with the opnening date has been up for about two weeks now so for the fans of this place hopefully it's a firm re-opening date.

I tried UC for the frist time for lunch. After all the hype, and sadness of it's false demise, I have to say that I was somewhat unimpressed. We arrived at noon for a quick lunch before a meeting in Tempe. We were the only ones there. I ordered the Brisket Sliders with beans and my dad has the Prime Rib Sanwich with garlic fries. We both had iced teas.

The Prime Ribs sandwich was a VERY generous sized portion, but quantity doesn't make it good. The meat was cooked nearly well done (no one ever asked how we wanted it) and was pretty gristle-y. Good smoky flavor, and a nice char crust. The sliders were okay, at best; I liked the spicy bbq sauce but didn't understand why the meat was little cubes, not "stringy" like brisket usually is. The beans were fine, but nothing great. The garlic fries lacked any crispiness and were barely even room temp. By the time we left, there were 3 tables filled.

I sure like the "idea" of UC...good homey food, casual atmosphere, lots of fun beers and other drinks. And I know that it's supposed to have a "campy" vibe to it, but it just felt run down to me. And I'm not some stuffy old guy that has to have fancy; I like the down home places.

If you're looking for good bbq, I'd choose Honey Bear BBQ over Urban Campfire any day of the week. Better food and same atmosphere (worse, actually; no table service and the tables/chairs are fold-up!)

I usually agree 100% with JK's sentiments and I know that he's a huge fan, so I guess our streak has ended!

Do they still have Genny Cream Ale? I haven't been yet, but I'll make a special trip for the Genny.

They had it when I was there a month ago.

All CHers should go there this weekend, just on general principle.

As far as I know they'll always stock Genesee Cream Ale.

After having the exact same conversation as gigi in the past, we finally went there today and they did have Genessee on the board. Next to the beer list. And the Absinthe (made with wormwood - limit 2).

We went at 1 and were the only people there for a while. Husband had ribs which were extremely tasty (although not quite as meaty as I would like), and I had roasted chicken slider. Potato salad side was delish. Garlic fries were super delish. Baked beans were quite onion-y. White trash beer was very cold and refreshing! 8-) Fun place, I hope they stay around for a while!

My wife and I were there on Friday early, and there was only one other party inside when we got there. I had the ribs and my wife had the pulled pork sandwich, with sides of potato salad, beans and fries. The ribs were probably the best overall that I have ever had, nice and meaty, crispy on the outside and very tender (not fall off the bone tender but very nice). It has been a long time that I was able to get a beer for under $2 (maybe not the best selection, but still pretty good with the ribs and sides). We took home more than we ate, and we ate a lot! The sides were also very tasty (not your typical BBQ place sides).

We don't live close at all, but we will make the trip from east Mesa, as long as they stay open. Nice place, great food and at a very reasonable price. I am looking forward to some more of the ribs today, and may still have some left over.

Thank god! I was so sad when I heard that! Me and my boyfriend have eaten there once and we really enjoyed it. I live right down the street from it so it ended up being brought up in conversations like this:

Me: "you know where we should go again sometime? that urban campfire place."
              Him "yeah that was good"
Me "yeah and it's so close"
Him "yeah that's awesome that it's so close...we'll go this weekend or something. Where do you want to eat tonight?"

When I heard it closed its doors, I felt partially responsible! We are definitely going SOON to show our support (or get one last meal in there if they really are on the verge of closing...but I hope not!).
