Good steakhouse for birthday dinner?
Well there are many great and hype on places like Campanile, Jar, Urasawa, Grace, etc. But I'm trying to nail down to a to-die-for steakhouse for a birthday dinner.
Ruth's Chris, Morton's and Mastro's are definitely boring. I've heard of Cut many times... and then now there's Jar, STK, BLT, BOA, Nick & Stef's, etc etc etc.
I wonder, what's hounder comment among them and which one would you recommend? :-)
thx!

There's a LA Weekly article out today, gave some pretty good comments regarding the "steakhouse phenomena" lately. Great read.

re: chestercopperpot
well.. that's just my personal opinion ChesterCopperPot...
I just tend to shy away from chain, that's all.
You can see Elmo's review of the Costa Mesa Mastro's here...

just went to cut last sat. night. expensive...got the least expensive steak ($50) but it was incredible. i told my wife " i didnt want to brush my teeth that night so i could taste it again in the morning". service was incredible as well. every bite of the steak was pure pleasure.

Seem like Jar might be easier on the wallet for my party... I went on Cut's website and man... I don't want that excellent experience (as everyone suggested) to ruin my Steakhouse try-out elsewhere... and not to add it'll make a big dent in my wallet ;-)
Hounders are awesome! Thx for all the 2-cents contributed! You guys rock!!!

I'm having a 2nd thought on my decision... after seeing CitySearch's review for all the 2008 entries.

Have any hounder been to Jar recently? it sound like the experience been downhill for the whole 2008... compare to 2007?! what happened? :-(

Cut or Jar - although i haven't tried any of the other 3 letter places - Nick and Stef's obviously has too many letters but it's decent too if you want to go downtown - otherwise Cut should be your number one choice for a steakhouse right now if price is no object
Not a big Craft fan, certainly not for steak when the other options are way better - plus it has over three letters in the name

re: ipsedixit
100% agree - Cut was flawless. And I also agree with the caveat - it may ruin you for the other steakhouses in LA.
I prefer the Boa in Santa Monica, but it's not really in Cut's league. Neither is Nick & Stef's. Jar is quite good - and may be a bit better (and a bit lighter on the wallet) for a group dinner. BLT Steak only recently opened - I'd actually be curious if anyone's tried it out yet? I'm a huge fan of the original in NY.

Added one more potential - Craft, as other told me about it
