      <content>Bashan wasn't even on the long list.  It's a bit of a popularity contest to get trimmed from that list to this.  Now the committee takes over.</content>

      <content>I just did a quick grep through the lists on the awards Web site and got the following geographical counts:

New York City: 21
Bay Area: 15
Chicago: 13
Los Angeles: 8

The analysis is rough, because of certain difficulties in the data: I didn't count Michael McCarthy in either LA or NYC; Chicago is more likely than LA to dominate its region (and receive more regional mentions); etc. But it is interesting that America's second-largest city was referenced so infrequently, at least among the nominations.</content>
