Al Copeland RIP

It is being reported that Al Copeland founder of Chowhound favorite Popeye's Fried Chicken has died:

Ironically, death was apparently caused by a malignant cancer found in his salivary gland.

  1. thanks for posting this
    it is sad

i love popeye's chicken too! although the last one here left along time ago ...
he did well and alot of people are happy the chain got started

    1. Cris Rose's column in the Times Picayune talks briefly about the man beyond the restauarants. How his Chrismas decorations were loved in the NOLA area.
      Does anyone remember Warren LeRuth?
After LeRuth's closed, Warren went to work with Copeland and was responsible for many really great dishes at Copeland's. Boss Sauce with fried crawfish was a reason to go to Popeye's.
Good to great food for everyone isn't celebrated enough.
But Copeland cared about quality and made good food for folks with not so much money. He started with great biscuits.

He was brought down by Bridge Loans tied to the purchase of Church's Chicken.

      Damned shame he's gone.
