"Tasty Channa"?

Just got back from Barbados with a snack called "Tasty Channa". It looks like some sort of fried bean or pea, and was packed in a small plastic juice bottle. There were a whole bunch of brands, the one we got was by "S. Anthony" of Trinidad. the ingredients are channa, vegetable oil, salt, and pepper.

I love this stuff and would love to learn more, where to buy it in the US, or how to make it myself.

You may buy the split channa online too.
    Try http://goshoptnt.com/patsy39s-split-c...

There are several varieties of chana and chana-snacks available in Indian grocery stores, all over US. Brands like Haldirams, Mopleez and even Frito-lay of India have this snack in some form or another, with different spice combos. Fried crispy garbanzo beans can also be found in mexican and even asian grocery stores, usually by the checkout , with a wide range of flavors.
For a different take on this snack, try chana -jor-garam, an import from India but some local Indian snack stores are making a good versions too , right here.

Channa is basically, Chick peas. The way to prepare them is to first soak them overnight in water to cover. dry them as well as you can next day, and then stir fry or bake in a 300 degree oven until hard and crispy. I prefer to bake them because you still have to fry them in a little oil, and then add the seasonings, sea salt, black pepper and in Trinidad we add finely diced and fried scotch bonnet pepper. Adds a little bite. Enjoy.

Thanks so much! Are there any brands you would recommend that might be sold in the US? And, is it always called just "Channa"?

Channa is a East Indian word I believe, So it is unlikely that you could find it under that name on the shelf of your local food store. When I can, I try to find dried chick peas, if not try to find Goya brand in the latin section . How did you like Barbados? had the flying fish and Banks beer ,I hope.

Barbados was great. It's a beautiful country, and if it hadn't been our first real vacation in a few years we would have loved to explore. We went to some great restaurants (The Cliffs and Scarlet) but I think our favorite food was the pan fried flying fish and, of course, a cold bottle of banks. Though Chefette was pretty good. :)

Do you think that http://www.chow.com/recipes/11203 would be similar to the "Tasty Channa"

Looks close but you will have to adjust the seasonings of course.I used to fly to Barbados in the 70's to dive and buy tires for my Mini Cooper because there were none available in 13 inches in Trinidad. The airport was the size of a large garden shed and when it rained Every one got wet.
