Tin Mill Restaurant

My husband and I finally got to go to the Tin Mill last night to celebrate our anniversary. I can honestly say, it was one of the best meals we've had. The staff is very attentive and friendly, and our server in particular, was wonderful. It's a nice casual atmosphere, but the food was more like fine dining. Also, not really a family restaurant (which was nice since we wanted a dinner away from our kids!).

We started with duo frites (yukon gold and sweet potato), with a chipotle dipping sauce. The server warned us that the sweet potatoes were addictive and filling, so he said sharing it was a good choice, so as to not spoil our appetites. He was right. I never knew a french fry could be so heavenly. They were thin and crisp, and sauce was delicious. My husband had the special, which were 5 colossal shrimp on a bed of Asian noodles with soy and lime sauce, fresh vegetables and toasted black sesames. My husband said the shrimp were cooked to perfection, but the noodles were so great, they didn't even need a protein to go with them. He offered me a taste (noodles only....mean Mr. Askosrose!), and I had to agree. I had a beef tenderloin topped with a peppered boursin cheese served with a rosti. I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. The combination of the creamy, decadent cheese with the perfectly cooked medium rare beef was delicious. I tried to make it last as long as I could, but alas, I had soon devoured it.

We had no intention of ordering dessert, but our server brought us the dessert menu and enticed us to at least share one. How could we resist? I wanted to share the creme brulee which was blueberry and orange scented, but my husband really wanted to try cheesecake, which was a mango coconut last night. It was outstanding. Creamy and tropical and I wish we hadn't shared!

So, all in all, it will be our place from here on in. I know Uxbridge is a little out of the way, but it is definitely worth the drive. Luckily, we live in Uxbridge, so it's only 10 minutes away from us! Oh, and make reservations early. I called on Tuesday for Saturday reservations, and they were only able to squeeze us in at 6:30. It was already full when we arrived and remained that way all night.

  1. Thanks for the review. I've been curious about it since reading an article about the restoration/renovation of this historic building -

My husband loved the building. Old, dark wood decor. Really beautiful and cozy.

    2. I heartily agree with your comments on the Tin Mill. I had dinner there for the first time a couple of Fridays ago with my wife and daughter and found the dining experience second to none. The service is great, the presentation is interesting without being over the top, the food is superb and the fusion of savory and sweet is a real experience. I had a seafood pasta dish with a sauce of chipotle offset with coconut milk containing shrimp, lobster and crab. The dish was a real wake up to the senses and very robust. We arrived early at 5:30 without reservations, because my daughter had made other arrangements for the evening, and were able to get seated. When we left the lineup was out the front door. Along with the restaurant I thought the crowd was very pleasant. A high star rating for this place. Definitely a great venue for special occasions. I am glad it is out of the way.

I'm glad to hear our experience wasn't a fluke! I look forward to going there again quite soon.

We've been many times, and never had a bad experience. Love the cozy rustic-chic setting, love the upscale menu. Not sure why any place upscale offers "frites"; they may be delicious (I'm told), but they are not upscale and they fill the room with the scent of deep-fry which is a shame (same thing deep fried spring rolls, they were delicious, but dripping with grease--fresh spring rolls are very popular elsewhere, hint, hint...). Love the ever-changing seasonal creme brulee. Last night's chai spice was as excellent as all the others.

      2. Just adding to the chorus... Tin Mill is probably one of our favourite restaurants in the GTA, for ambience [lovely room, no pretension], food, & price point. Tips: if you want a romantic outing, ask for the nook near the door; there is a great 3 course prix-fixe brunch on Sundays; and if you like carrot cake, their version is the best I have ever had in my life, bar none- we were there around noon once and people came in just to order two slices of the cake with coffee for lunch!
