Pomegranate Reaffirmation San Diego

I celebrated my birthday here this past week and must say that I had a fantastic time. I was sure to ask Josh for the name of the beers I had recalled he recommended. So with Josh's advice I got the Baltika Porter "6" and two others had the Red "4." Thank you sir!

This brewery out of St. Petersburg produces some fine beer. The porter drank super smooth, was slightly sweet with light molasses tones; it really had me questioning my aversion to darker end beers. The red was wonderful - I loved the bright mild raspberry taste that I could discern from it. The light that also was ordered was quite drinkable.

Its not a visit to Pomegranate without the requisite Russian Salad plate. The tastes of each of the cool, unusal flavors for Californians had everyone at the table swooning and trying to figure out the contents of each. I liked em all but the Indian flavored green bean and Georgian lobio still stand out to me and the sucker I am for beets - the beet salad too!

We ordered the Georgian chicken dish in a cinnamon laced walnut sauce that reminded me slightly of Chiles en Nogada. The thighmeat was fall apart tender.

Stuffed pepper with Kasha - Kasha rules OK!

"Cutlet" special - ground lamb and beef meatballs that were well-made - the sometimes harsh flavor of lamb was coaxed into a milder state with the beef. These were moist and great to eat with the fresh herbs and viegar flavor from the pickles.

Beef Stroganoff - easily the best restaurant rendition Ive had. Beef was flavorful and tender - sauce was creamy and robust.

For dessert we got a cake - by this time I had trouble remembering the name. I can best liken it to what I would imagine bread pudding in Georgia to taste of. Really not sweet - but went really well with the ice cream.

Cool birthday all and all!

Happy Birthday Alex! Sounds like you guys had fun. I really want to try this place sometime, I have heard good things about it. The Stroganoff sounds really good!

Thank you for the update. I again passed this place by on the way to Mama's Bakery. We really need to give it a try. It seems like it deserves more attention.
