Five hounds gathered at Pho Hanoi in San Jose for lunch yesterday. We came for northern style pho and unborn eggs. We ordered to share:

1 large pho bo dac biet, with fresh noodles
1 large pho ga dac biet, also with fresh noodles
1 side order of meatballs (comes with beef pho broth)
1 side order of unborn eggs & chicken organ meats (comes with chicken pho broth)
2 orders of fried spring rolls (called nem cua be on the menu)

Cynthia took pictures so I hope she'll post them.

Prices are higher than usual pho houses, $7.25 for each pho dac biet which was about the size of a regular elsewhere, and $7.25 for each plate of 3 spring rolls. Meatballs were $1.50 and the side order of unborn eggs & organ meats is a reasonable $3. I wonder if you can order like 5 side orders of unborn eggs to go... Derek & Karen would clean out their stock. As you'll see from the photos later, the unborn eggs were not "weird" , they really were just miniature spheres of yolk - no embryo bits or anything.

The pho bo continues to satisfy me as one of the best examples of northern style pho. It's still at the top of my pho rankings, though this time they lost 2 points for serving lemon instead of lime in the garnish plate. The pho ga was also satisfying and the fresh noodles a big plus, but I & some others thought it was too salty. I continue to enjoy their (pricey) spring rolls, they were shatteringly crisp even though we didn't eat them right away.

Hope others will share their thoughts!

Thank you for leading this trip down memory lane of a great noodle soups.

Really loved that Pho Hanoi will let order extra items to lift your bowl of noodles.

Next time I will pick of couple of limes from the tree in the backyard or stop at a market to limes. I too miss the lime.

Will be back ahead of Chowfun you have never seen him when he spots a unborn egg.

In the past unborn eggs do not travel well. So Derek and Karen will have to come on down next time.

Look forward for the next meal.
