We were heading home on Mon 3/17/08 and wanted to go somewhere to eat dinner. Our plan was to eat at In-N-Out in Kettlemen City, but I saw the sign that said Pupusas, Ice-Cream. I'm so there. So we got off I-5 and found Tita's which is on the Left side.

It's a restaurant, but you can also get to-go. We decided to eat there. FREE chips & salsa. I didn't try the chips, salsa to me was kinda blah.

I picked pupusa revuelta (cheese & pork) which is a Salvadorean specialty. It was ok, though didn't taste or see any pork. It was kinda burnt on the side which I don't appreciate so made my friend take it.
Also comes with a huge tub of cortida (Salvadorean coleslaw) and a mild tomato like sauce.

I also got a lengua taco which was fine. Nothing special.

Friend also got a pupusa-a squash & cheese one he liked better than mine. I found it fine. He picked carne asada taco I think and he liked it.

Our total was $9.75 or so before tip. Service is Slow though. Don't eat here if you're in a hurry.

if you are willing to drive about 15 minutes further to Taft, Julie's taco wagon is worth the stop.

Coming home from LA today, same exit, but I was entranced by the name of a new (to me anyway) place (Planeta Roja: a somewhat unusual name for a Mexican restaurant, and hubby is a bit of an astronomy buff, so even though he wasn't with me I decided to try it instead of Titas...)..Planeta Roja is in a large building next to the Shell station right at the Buttonwillow exit (on the right when heading north).

Interesting set up: there is a taco truck in the parking lot, but I wanted to use the facilities (which were very clean), so went into the restaurant. I was the only one there at 1 pm...restaurant is very simple, with red walls (natch) and the Discovery Channel playing in Spanish...

turns out if you order inside, the guy calls on a walkie talkie to the taco truck, they make your food, and bring it in...I had two tacos de carne asada, and a chicken sope. There is a salsa bar, and the salsa is definitely NOT blah: the verde was particularly hot and flavorful.

Tacos were ok: decent asada, nice chopped cilantro and onion, tortillas were packaged but tasted fresh. Sope would have been pretty good, but iceberg lettuce and packaged-tasting pre-shredded cheddar cheese piled on top took away a lot of the appeal. The chicken was grilled; I would have preferred shredded. They had lengua, al pastor, a few other choices too...

I also got two Mexican cokes (the real stuff, with sugar, not corn syrup, I checked) from the cooler: one to drink with my lunch and one to go for the road.

Total for two tacos, one sope, and two cokes was also about $9.75 or so. Service was extremely prompt: I was in and out in less than fifteen minutes, including getting caught up for a few minutes watching whatever Deadliest Catch would be called in Spanish...

Other than the salsa verde there was nothing really special about Planet Roja, (except the name, perhaps) but sounds like it might be as good or better a choice at that I-5 exit as Tita's...though there is a bbq place next door...didn't catch the name; has anyone tried it?
