Rare Bar and Grill is Terrific

I had an awesome burger at Rare Bar and grill tonight. The T-bone burger and Stuffed American Kobe Burger are fantastic. French fry tasting basket is awesome too- sweet potatoes, shoestring fries, and sweet potato fries with three dipping sauces. Great, crispy onion rings as well. I was tempted to order dessert but was way too full. The burgers are huge and I was only able to eat half. Definitely a top 5 burger in my opinion. Great find!

  1. I love it there too. The burgers are fantastic, onion rings not greasy at all. I have never been able to do dessert either and I usually end up bringing half my burger home bec. the tasting basket is huge.

I don't know why, but I've never been immensely thrilled with my burgers at Rare. They are good, but I never felt they were anything to write home about.

I've always found the meat a little too dry and you can tell it's been manipulated a little too much (i.e., when they were making the patties). They're not bad, but other burgers are more juicy and tender.

    2. Are ther still 2 locations? One on Bleecker and one on Lex.? If so which one did you enjoy?

I've been to the one on Lex and really enjoy their burgers - and fries!

always liked Rare fir the burgers and other food, but its never really mentioned often when people talk about the best burgers. dont know why. love the lexington location even though im closer to the bleecker one. good solid food in nice surroundings.

        2. Rare in the Shelbourne Hotel on Lexington Avenue does have good burgers and a great variety of them which is a big plus. There is the usual hamburger, cheese burger, etc...but there are chicken burgers, portabello burgers and other creative items on the menu. The french fry basket is great for sharing as well. The place is great for getting together with a bunch of friends to hang out and enjoy a decent meal and some burgers. I don't think it is the best by any means but certainly above average and usually perfect for when you have a yearn for burgers. I have yet to be, but everyone I know raves about The Shake Shack so when its open, it might be worth a try.

Shake Shack is open and has been all winter. While Shake Shack is very good, I wouldn't equate it to Rare. If you want a nice sit down restaurant with adescent sized burger (beef, chicken, fish), Rare is good. Shake Shack burgers are smaller and you have to enjoy your burger outside in Madison Square park or take it to go.

I agree in that Rare has the best burgers in the city. I love the burger trio of three mini burgers and caesar salad! I always go to the one on Lex.

i've been to the one on bleecker 1/2 dozen times or so and always been happy. good to know the one on lex is possibly better. i've walked by it a few times.

Best burger in the city? I went to Rare one time and thought the burger was fine but at $14 I have no intention of ever returning. There are many better and cheaper burgers served in a nice environment.

I'm right there with you. A perfectly fine burger but nothing that made me want to go back, esp. at their inflated prices.

I am right there with you. Granted the meat had a wonderful smokey flavor but for $14.00 it should be!

            2. I tried the Bleecker on once and wasn't impressed. Haven't gone back, even though I'm in the neighborhood.
