A store to buy fresh masa in San Diego or Palm Springs Area?

  • 5

Having had 13 feet of snow (!) thus far this winter here in Ottawa (Canada), I have tamales on my mind and am looking for a store where I could buy fresh masa for *tamales* [tricky to find sometimes] in San Diego. I will be passing through on the way to Palm Springs next week, so a place near-ish to San Diego airport or in the general direction of Palm Springs would be ideal. Any ideas? THANKS!

  1. I just called El Indio (619) 299-0333 and they have it. They are very close to the airport.

You might need to call ahead.

    1. If you are taking 8 east to 15 north, you can take a quick detour to Pancho Villa Market. It is a mexican supermarket with a machina to make tacos, and they always have masa para tamales for about $0.80 per pound, I think.

It's on El Cajon Blvd just east of the 805 offramp

      1. Wow! Thanks for the great information...now I just have to decide what kind of tamales to make...

I got masa at the Cardenas market in Indio (it apparently is a chain with a number of locations in S. Calif). Great store, if a bit sterile, and the prices were great. I froze the masa in the hotel freezer, wrapped it in newspaper, and even after about 14 hours of travel in my suitcase, it was still frozen on my arrival. It smelled amazing and I can't want for la tamalada. Thanks again, Chowhounds.

        2. El Nopalito in Encinitas is where I get mine but you can frequently find it in the meat case at Albertson's groc store.
