Where can I buy UNpasteurized yogurt in NYC?
Any sources?
I've tried Gourmet Garage and the Yoghurt Place, but to no avail.
Thanks!

on 13th street, at the Integral Yoga Center, there is a vegetarian market that has unpasteurized yogurt. I know this because I feed my cat it and it took me a while to find it. They are between 7th avenue and Greenwich.

I think this question is kind of confusing because we're not really sure what the OP is talking about. Ronnybrook Farms can be considered unpasteurized in spite of being made with pasteurized milk because the yogurt is not heated after culturing. You can also make unpasteurized yogurt from raw milk, and call it unpasteurized. But if you make it from raw milk and heat the milk to about 180 degrees (which is the way yogurt is usually made), then it already pasteurizes the milk. Then there is also another type of yogurt where the milk (preferably raw but not necessarily) is not heated to 180 but to a much lower temperature called unpasteurized yogurt. This yogurt is much runnier and not what we generally associate with yogurt.

I believe that it is illegal to sell unpasteurized dairy products in New York State in retail outlets. They can only be bought from farms. As I read somewhere, they are totally illegal in New Jersey, but legal in Connecticut. I know it is against federal law to transport unpasteurized dairy across state lines.

The only way your going to get unpasteurized/unhomogenized yogurt is if you go through a milk club. Check out the Weston a Price organization (google it to get their web address) and click on links to find a locale chapter in NYC. Raw milk is also available-yum,yum.

re: Legman
It's relatively easy to find unhomogenized milk (and therefore yogurt). E.g., Ronnybrook Dairy Farm's is. But the OP asked about unpasteurized, which is a whole other thing. I think Ronnybrook's yogurt, while using their unhomogenized milk is still pasteurized. So you're right that a milk club might be the best route.

I don't know the name of the place I went to during a food tour of Greenwich village and Soho but it is located on Sullivan street just south of the famous bakery on that street...sullivan bread company which changed names recently...Can I be any more precise...haha....The yogourt we ate there was incredible! It was topped with figs and apricots. You can buy the greek yogourt and the condiments to put on top all in the same place. If I am not mistaken, it is south of Prince on the east side of the street. Maybe someone here will recognize the place and give you the name.

No - they don't have yogurt as far as I know - Joe's is just south of Houston. I'm going to see what I can find googling ....
Love Joe's though ... will never forget taking my husband for the first time years ago, before lunch with a bunch of his friends in Soho, he ate an entire ball of smoked mozzarella before lunch.

No...we went to Joe's dairy on the same tour, which by the way was so fun, and ate smoked mozzarella. It was freshly made that day. The tour guide brought us fresh salami from Pino's meats just in front of Joe's dairy. Every tourist who love foods should look into doing a food tour, especially when you have been a couple of times to NY before.

If you mean yogurt like Stonyfield Farms you can get that at many markets, including Whole Foods. I'm surprised that Gourmet Garage wouldn't carry something like that. If you mean yogurt made from unpasteurized milk, I don't think there is any in NYC. You would probably have to go upstate for that.
