Desperately Seeking Indian Food In PBC

holldoll Mar 21, 2008 07:07 AM

Are there any Indian restaurants in Palm Beach County or beyond that are worth the trip.
There seems to be a deficit in this ethnic category!!

Taste of Indian Restaurant on Okeechobee Blvd in West Palm Beach a mile (West) of the Florida Turnpike entrance on the North Side of the road next to Grand China Restaurant. Even better IMO is Indian Grill & Bar Restaurant on Royal Palm Beach Blvd located in a small hidden Strip Mall. Both of the above Restaurants often have half price Coupons on Localdines.com and Restaurants.com too! Great selection of excellent Indian Beers and Beers at both establishments as well.

Taste of India is on the south side of the street not the north. Also the Chinese resto is Grand Lake.

Have either of you tried Indu's near the new WPB Outlet Mall? It has been a while since I have been but I liked it as much as Taste of India.

When it first opened several years ago I went twice, once for the Lunch Buffett and once for Dinner. It was pretty good. Went again. a year or two later and it was absolutely terrible! I know (any) Restaurant can be "off" on any given night but that experience was sooo Bad, every thing from the Naan Bread, Appetizers, to the Entree was Poor! I heard there was new Ownership/Management. With Taste of Indian and the Indian Grill & Bar in Royal Palm Beach, no need to return. On Village Blvd also off Palm Beach lakes Blvd near the new Outlet Mall in the Publix Shopping Centre is Saffron Indian Restaurant which is also pretty good if you avoid the skimpy Buffett and stick with the regular Lunch and Dinner menu.

Coming soon to Royal Palm Plaza (just below Mizner) in Boca Raton: Sapphire Indian Cuisine

I saw one article saying it's affiliated with the NYC restaurant of the same name... but could not confirm.

Still waiting for news on this... I am getting a hankering for Indian!

This appeared in Boca Mag in September... about Royal Palm Plaza near Mizner...

"Also coming to RPP, in the old Fusionarie space, is a local branch of New York-based Sapphire Indian Cuisine. I can’t tell you much about what we’ll be getting here, but if the Big Apple location is any guide, look for a much more extensive and interesting menu of Indian specialties than we’re used to seeing in these parts."

From what I've heard it's not a direct affiliation to the one in NYC. And that website is wrong one.
The RPP Boca one is >> http://sapphireboca.com/

Right... and the new owner (Raju Brahmbhatt) apparently WAS affiliated with Sapphire Indian Restaurant in the northeast...

Just not the one in NYC.

He had one in Morris County NJ, also called Sapphire.

              In any event... patiently waiting.

There is a new Indian Restaurant that recently opened on the corner of Okeechobee Blvd and Royal Palm Beach Blvd in Royal Palm Beach, FL Got a discount $25 coupon on Restaurants.com I haven`t tried yet.

New Indian restaurant on Sample Road in Coral Springs - Chutney & Pickle Fine Indian Cuisine.

Looks fairly contemporary as far as Indian restaurants go. The menu is mid-priced with a large selection of meat dishes, some fish and seafood, Southern Indian, and vegetarian options, plus a vindaloo/phall section. Planning on checking it out soon.

This weekend in Delray - Asian Festival at Old School Square. March 24th & 25th
                Noon to 10 p.m.

Numerous food booths including Indian. I don't have a list but I did see a truck from "Nirala Sweet House & Restaurant" out of Sunrise.

                "Food & Multi-Cultural Market place

My wife and I love Indian Food and think anyone would very very satisfied with these three restaurants. Our absolute 2 favorire are on Okeechobee RD in WPB. One near the Corner of Haverhill RD and the other a mile or so farther west next to Grand Lake Chinese. Indian Pavillion and Indian Palace are both spot on. Saffron in WPB on Village Blvd is also quite good but IMO a step below the first two. As far as Indus in WPB, it was very good when it first opened. Went there a week ago, except for the breads (nan) etc and the Samosa`s , nothing was eatible. Without a doubt, the worst Indian dining experience ever and the service was equally bad as well.

Correction, The Indian Restaurant located west of the Florida Turnpike on Okeechobee Rd is I believe Taste of India. It, as well as the other Indian Restaurant located near Okeechobee and Haverhill Rd, India Palace are both suburb. There is even an excellent Indian Grocery store adjacent to it. Not sure if you allowed to post (discount) vouchers but both Madras as well as Taste of Indian feature half off discount coupons on both Restaurants.com and South FL Dines Out.

As they say, "You Pay-You Get", (not always true) " You Don`t Pay-You Don`t Get" but except for some inexpensive Chop Suey Houses in a Chinatown, thats usually the case. Perhaps India Palace, further East on Okeechobee near Haverhill is a bit less expensive but IMO, very close in quality. Never had a bad experience at either establishment. Taste Of India has a marvelous selection of Beers from India in both 12 oz and Pint size bottles, hmmmm!

A good friend and someone whose palate I respect told me that the new Indian resto right next to Grandlake Chinese Cuisine (same plaza) up on Okeechobee is now open and he had a great meal there. I might just have to wander up and see if all the fuss he's making is real. Would be nice: you could do Chinese and Indian cravings in 1 go!

Not until now. I find this place kind of odd to where they also have live music and a sports bar in addition to the resto. This area around the PB Mall is of concern, so take that into consideration.

I went to Indu's for lunch today. It's a pretty nice place and the staff is very friendly and helpful. Buffet runs from 11:30 to 2:30 I believe. It was mostly Indian clientel with a few exceptions. The menu is not as extensive as Taste Of India but it is much more reasonable in price.

The waiter said he was going to make me an authentic Indian snack to try as I was looking the menu over. It was called bhalla chaat made of puffed rice, garbanzos, a spice blend, tamarind mint sauce, chutney of some sort, and cilantro. It was very good and I had never had it before.

I had a mango lassi and the buffet. Quite a few good items on the buffet but not as many as Saffron. They made me a somosa and brought naan bread. There was a soup that was really good but I forgot the name. The waiter was really nice and explained the Indu significance of herbs and spices. Total bill with drink was only $13.80 without tip. The menu looks pretty good and they have a belly dancer on Fri and Sat nights if that interests you. It is fairly nice inside but they will not get any drive by business in that location.

I have to take back what I said about the area it is in. Just don't get lost in the surrounding area.

Indu's continues to be a really good place for Indian. I don't know if it is worth a 30 min drive for Boca folks but it's well worth my 12 minute drive. Last Saturday night they had two musicians who were actually quite good and not too loud. We had chicken 65 app and chicken balti, both which were very good. I will be back to try more dinner entrees and the prices are reasonable for the quality of food. They are doing a fair amount of business in the dining room but the bar side was empty.

I just read that Indu's is now under new management and the food has gone downhill. John Linn and CF Byrne didn't seem impressed enough to go back recently.

I went to Curries and More this evening and was very disappointed. I used to live in the UK so am very fond of Indian food. I find Taj in Deerfield Beach very good.
The naan at Curries was not good at all - very rubbery, the chicken tikka for $14.95 was served on a couple of skewers with vegetables and french fries. Yes french fries. I have never seen anything like this. The tadkar dal was very bland and the saag paneer did not have much flavor at all. Not impressed at all.

Curries and More's naans are inedible. i don't believe they have a Tandoor so they just can't make them there. I have had reasonable chicken korma there.

The Bombay Cafe on Glades by the hospital is ok for take-away but still substandard compared to a British curry.

It is first rate and well worth a trip from PBC. It's the best I have seen in Broward yet.

Which reminds me... Butter Chicken often known as Chicken Makhani. In some restaurants, it's virtually (or actually) the same as Chicken Tikka Masala. At Bombay Cafe on Glades, in fact, I think it IS the same dish - but on two places under 2 names on the menu. There version is good but different from the normal - it is VERY tomato-ee! Almost like it has a strong tomato paste base. The Tikka Masala at Curries and More was excellent.

I personally would not rec Punjab in Boca to anyone. It's in an old hotel and has a moldy, musty smell inside. The food is probably the worst Indian food I have ever had.

I'm from Atlanta and moved here last year. There is a defecit of Indian, Vietnamese, and Korean restos here. My only offering to you is Saffron in WPB on Village Blvd. but it gets mixed reviews. I personally have not found better, but I am still on a quest.

quite agree with you freaker - the Punjab is unbelievably awful. I am a Brit and whilst not Indian, we Brits know our Indian food. This was frozen veggies amongst other things, all the sauces tasted and looked the same.

The Bombay Cafe on Glades and I-95 by the Boca Raton Community Hospital is better - though it is not pleasant to eat at it works for take out.

I will happily come on a quest with you - we should try Curries and More - nobody I know will dare try Indian food and I get desperate being used to having an Indian at least once a week in the UK. I have been to Woodlands in Coral Springs and was disappointed. My other alternative is to make homemade curry but it's not the same as sitting down to a plethora of good mixed dishes.

On a seperate note, Freaker, have you tried siagon cuisine in Coconut Creek, not that far south of PBC and worth the trip IMO

I live in Palm Beach Gardens and work in Boca, so I never go any further south except for a baseball game or concert. Thanks for the heads up though.

My wife and I really enjoyed it and recommended to a couple of co-workers who know a bit about Indian food. They stopped for dinner Wednesday night and said it was very good.

Other than that, you really have to head south to Madras Cafe.

marky, do you mean India Palace? It's on Okeechobee past military, on the south side of the street. Very, very good. My favorite.

Mrs CFB and I hit "Curries and More" on East Palmetto Park in Boca Raton last night.

                                                        The bad news first...

Service could have been a bit better. It was not that busy but I had to ask twice for my Kingfisher. And then the mistake that always drives me nuts. We asked for a check, got it, I put my card out... and then sat there for 10 minutes. I hate when a good dining experience is spoiled at the end when I have to wait for check or payment. I'm not a sit-around-and-chat-for-an-hour after dinner so I do get impatient.

                                                        Now the good news...

The Chix Tikka Masala was delicous, I asked for it half way between hot and Indian hot and they delivered. I think the key to good Indian is freshly ground spices and I seemed to have detected that in both our dishes.

Mrs CFB had Spinach Saag and it was also excellent. On the side we had pappadam with some chutneys and butter naan. The basmati rice is excellent, seasoned nicely.

glad you liked it CFB, it's not too bad for South Florida and agree the Chicken Tikka Masala is good there.
They have no idea how to make Naan bread so it's not worth ordering it. I am not convinced they have a Tandoori oven. Even if they do, their naans are just all wrong.

According to comments on their Facebook page, and other review sites...

I've said many times, an Indian Restaurant would certainly fill an empy niche in Delray Beach. We have Punjab to the south, in Boca. And a couple of places in WPB I believe are the nearest to the north. That's a hole just waiting to be filled in.

Meanwhile we have appx 200 Italian and 400 Sushi/Thai/Japanese places within about 6 blocks! OK I am exagerating a bit but not much.

Boca is south PBC - so search this board for very recent discussion of new place called Curries and More. You've also got Punjab and Bombay Cafe. Search here for them - or read this:
