Disposal of fry oil [moved from L.A. board]

I read elsewhere on CH that in the Bay Area you can freeze used fry oil in a paper milk carton and toss the whole thing in the green (compost) bin. Is this true here as well? Otherwise I would just seal it in a jar and toss it in the black bin.
