need restaurant in or near palo alto

Hi-
any ideas for eating in palo alto? I'll be there overnight and want to take my stanford-attending son out to eat. I've only been there last fall to help him move in so I'm not really familiar with things. We did cruise university avenue so i know there are things there.
Any good steak houses? How about asian? Doesn't have to be downtown palo alto.
thanks for any thoughts on this

  1. 1) NOLO is New Orleans food with great drinks, cool patio, etc.

    2) Mantra is a cool California/Indian Restaurant (see video here:

    3) Straits , excellent Asian/Singapore style food

That's Nola and the food is really mediocre.
On California there's a great cuban style place called La Bodeguita del Medio.
Also on University La Strada is good for Italian (the pizzas and pastas especially). I'll second the Mantra suggestion.

    2. I wouldn't recommend Strait's Palo Alto - used to be good. For steaks there's the new Fleming's and old standby Sundance. Haven't been to either but have heard that Fleming's is good. Morton's is supposedly opening in Palo Alto sometime next year(?).

I'll second Sundance Mining Company. Its been about a year since I was there.
Decent service. The Porterhouse was awesome last time.
Its very casual and not expensive.

      2. Check out Lavanda and St. Michael's Alley. I noticed on your recent post you enjoyed Kokkari in SF. I believe Evvia in Palo Alto is a cousin.

Lavanda has a great wine selection

          Nola's food...OK, ambience...great

          Straits...great combination lunch selection

        2. Tamarine would be an excellent choice. Upscale but not stuffy Vietnamese.
          Many wonderful dishes here.

            I agree. Tamarine is excellent.

If you are at all interested in Indian food, Junnoon is also very good.

I second the votes for Evvia, Tamarine, and Sundance. Straits was awful the last few times we went. Fleming's has better atmosphere than steaks. Hyderabad House is cheap and delicious; Shokolaat is expensive and delicious.

It's at least worth noting in passing that Fleming's is a chain steakhouse, owned by Outback. Nothing necessarily wrong with that (I've been to more than one independent steakhouse that wasn't really the equal of Outback, let alone Ruth's Chris), but it might reduce the interest factor a little.
