Chess pie in Raleigh

I'm going to be in Raleigh over the weekend (Hoya Saxa!) and a friend requested that I bring him back a chess pie. Is there a bakery or restaurant that anyone can recommend? He specificed plain chess pie, not chocolate chess or lemon chess.

I'll be staying in a hotel in Raleigh but will be spending Saturday in Chapel Hill, if it matters.

Also, if there are any must-go restaurants in the area, give a holler! We blew our money on basketball tickets so please keep it cheap.

  1. The Angus Barn in Raleigh has chess pie on the menu. Can't attest to how good it is, but I know people who love it. It might be worth a call to see if they sell whole ones.

    1. The Angus Barn does have an excellent chess pie. The will even give you the recipe.

I think the Angus Barn only features Chocolate chess pie. It's delicious .

      2. There's a place in Chapel Hill on Weaver Dairy Road called The Barbecue Joint that has chess pie sometimes. You could give them a call to see if they have any plain ones (for some reason most places, if they serve chess pie at all, will sell chocolate or lemon - Allen and Sons has a coconut one) and if they'll sell you a whole one.

I can't think of any bakeries that sell them ... odd, now that I think about that.

        1. I've only ever had them at family gatherings. My mom used to make them....

You may want to search this board for cheap eats and local food. There have been some useful suggestions through the years. Hope you have a good weekend!
