Avon/Edwards/Vail/Boulder - Recent Report
Report on recent Colorado ski trip, Thursday-Sunday of last week
Lunch 1 we ate at the Coyote Café at the bottom of the slopes in Beaver Creek. Totally fine for what it is, the pork green chile hit the spot as did the cold beer. Nothing life-alternating and not one I’m listing as a recommend – but just fine for a break mid-ski.
Dish in Edwards (Contemporary Small Plates)

open nightly: 5pm until 11 pm Monday-Saturday
Dish was FABULOUS. We sat at the chef’s counter at the exhibition kitchen, which I would highly recommend. Colorado tourists haven’t caught on that this is the best seat in the house so chances are you’ll be able to sit there. Very affordable for the level of food you’re getting, and the overall experience. Menu changes daily, but we enjoyed truffled popcorn, a tapas of sherry, manchego and Serrano ham, truffled fontina-filled tater tots, potato soup, sweet potato gnocchi, beet salad, shrimp shooter, jerk chicken, steak, and osso bucco, the brownie dessert with dark chocolate and fresh mint syrup, and some caramelized bananas. I would say the tots, the shrimp shooter and the gnocchi were our most favorite things, but really we enjoyed everything. The tots were like arancini, with a creamy cheesy center and a crispy outside, absolutely amazing. And the gnocchi were the pillowy balls they’re supposed to be rather than the heavy lumps I usually have received. And the shooter is spicy Bloody Mary like deliciousness and something I definitely want to make at home. We also really enjoyed the specialty cocktails (we tried the Dark and Stormy and the Pomegranate cosmo), the featured Rose, which was fabulous, and anything else I could be forgetting. You absolutely must go there if you’re in town!
Swiss Hotdog Company 970-476-2013 Traer Creek Plaza, Avon
Lunch 2 we ate at an old classic reinvented: The Swiss Hot Dog stand. I hadn’t been since it moved from Lionshead in Vail Village over to Avon. Lean veal brats on a fresh roll with sprouts, mustard, onions and curry seasoning that Ernst will gladly tell you is “cheap cocaine.” The regular, which is 2 brats, is really about perfect sizewise. The chicken noodle soup is also surprisingly tasty, with fresh lime and cilantro and as Ernst will also tell you, will help prevent illness with the Vitamin C in its fresh vegetables. Believe it or not, this is a MUST eat at some point!
La Bottega, Vail Village
I don’t know that I’d recommend this one. We wanted to go into Vail Village, and didn’t want to spend an arm and a leg, and this had some positive reviews on Chowhound, so we thought we’d give it a go. We sat at the pizza bar (didn’t have a reservation), and they were able to seat us right away there, which was a plus. But, it was like they were desperate to flip the seats – our food came out immediately with course 2 being rushed in only minutes after our starters. It certainly wasn’t as cheap as fast food so it was annoying to feel so rushed. Some of the food was very good – loved the 4-cheese pizza and the special pizza of the day, which featured duck and truffles I believe. I also liked the carpaccio, and the kobe ravioli was pretty good. I wasn’t all that impressed with the special salad of the day, which featured arugula, pine nuts and proscuitto, nor was I that wild about the Caesar – they were out of anchovies! We were really disappointed with the carbonara – my husband makes better carbonara. It tasted like they mixed in the egg while it was still cooking rather than fold in the yolk at the very end, so it was clumpy versus silky. Anyway – if you’re craving pizzas I’d go for it as they were fabulous, but for anything more than that I’d probably skip it.

Highly recommended if you’re craving a high-end burger. We each had the burger medium with Tillamook cheddar, with a side order of the truffle and Parmesan fries, and chocolate shakes. Absolutely fabulous. Simple spot – nothing too fancy as far as the interior goes – but exactly what you need from a burger spot.
The Saloon in Minturn (Mexican
Cuervo Tradicional Margaritas, chips with salsa and guacamole, and the best quail this side of the Mississippi. Enough said! I will say it was far quieter than expected…I’ve been going here for probably 15 years now and have never seen it so dead during peak ski season! Great to not have to wait for a table but the crazy packed scene is part of its charm. The food was still excellent though! Ask for the special hot stuff to spice up the salsa!

We were happy to stumble onto this fabulous spot (we had just narrowly survived a hungover 2-hour curvy road mountain drive and were famished!). The chef used to work under Jamie Oliver, and the interior and menu looked right up our alley. We enjoyed the grilled bread with durazno jam, the tomato soup which was really excellent, and among us the Full English breakfast, the Dutch pancake with ham and Gruyere cheese, the Ahi tuna salad sandwich with green bean salad, and the lamb burger, as well as some delicious Bloody Marys. My favorite thing at the table was probably the Dutch pancake – a big rolled over crepe really that was just oozing with goodness. Definitely recommended!
Lots of food! A great trip with a lot of spots we’ll be going back to. Thanks to Chowhound for help with the research! J
I would suggest that anyone wanting to eat at the counter overlooking the kitchen at Dish should specifically reserve it, rather than take a chance. I didn't know about the counter option ahead of time. On the first of our two visits last September, once I saw the counter I immediately asked if we could sit there (and we had reservations) but they declined because they said they weren't staffed properly in terms of waitstaff, and no one was sitting at the counter that night. Fine, understandable I guess, it was very quiet that week and definitely an in-between season (mid-Sept.). We sure enjoyed our dinner anyway. But that night I changed our second reservation, for later that week, so we could sit at the counter, and the second visit was stellar. I'm drooling just at the thought of those tater tots, not fair!
