RW: Mare (and more)
Walked thru the craziness of the Fanueil Hall area to the relative quiet of the North End and Mare last nite for a great RW meal. Yes, it happens, a great RW meal. Altho there was a bit of disappointment when a few things that were listed online were not on the menu including some tweaks to the mussels dish and they took off what was going to be my dessert, vanilla bread pudding w/ amaretto ice cream. Someone next to us ordered it and it looked great, that rest. group definitely knows how to do bread pudding. But on to what we actually ate. Waiter let me have a taste of the riesling which I decided wasn't too sweet and got a good pour of that. We also had prosecco, beer and some higher end white wine and avoided the $12 cocktails made with that vodka that squeaks in under the beer and wine only license. Decent bread basket with good olives and olive oil and three of us started with caesar salad w/ popcorn shrimp, one had the buffalo moz. salad. All three of us agreed it was one of the best caesars we'd ever had, very tasty dressing and the perfect amount, shrimp were yummy, all around good stuff. Two of us had salmon and two had pork. Yes, salmon is the standby RW menu item but very well done with a great crisp skin, roasted cauliflower, Swiss chard and onion marmalade. Small amounts of the sides but overall, very good. The pork shank made our salmon look like a child's portion, huge falling off the bone, w/ roasted sweet potatoes and cippolini onions. The guys enjoyed it. Dessert for 3 of us was tortino di ricotta which made me forget the bread pudding. Very nice crust and flavor to the cheesecake, coconut gelato was fine but the torte was the star here. Trio of gelati was choc., vanilla and caramel. Not really into the changing lights they have there but it's a nice, modern looking room (about 2/3 full last nite). Service was pleasant and on top of water refills, etc. With a few more glasses of wine and beer, it came to about $206 w/ tax. The dinners served next to us looked great too, maybe worth their relatively high normal prices.
Finally stopped into the pie place in Newton Center and didn't actually get a real piece of pie, I will be back for one tho. Grabbed a calzone shaped thing of egg, ham and cheese which was tasty with the good pastry they use. I was surprised to see a hard boiled egg in there and some carrots and veggies, but it was good and hefty ($4.95). Their choc. cookie was huge, moist and a relative bargain at $1.50. The next day was the trip to Cafe Cakes with my nephew and niece who were a little out of control. But they enjoyed the strawberry shortcake cake and a raspberry yogurt cake (ordered cuz it was pink). As I've said, I'm not really into fancy little cakes like that but they were pretty good for $3.95. I went for an oatmeal choc. chip cookie which didn't have enough chewiness for me but was okay. And the hot chocolate was very good and made a little cooler for the kids.
Dinner on Sat. was at Geoffrey's in Roslindale where we got the last booth at 7PM but it got quiet again a little later. Had a might fine burger for $7.95. I think it had both bacon and cheese on it for that low amount. It was done below medium but not worth sending back. There was a delicious salty crust to it that I liked. Served w/ homemade potato chips, more heft to it than a chip and a lot of them. There's an option of black bean salad too which he brought me a bit of and was a little on the vinegary side for me. DC had steak tips which he enjoyed altho the sides of mashed and grilled zucchini didn't look as massive as when I got meat loaf there a few weeks ago. Everyone working there is really fun, good decent food for short money.
Re: Mare. I am normally not too much of a dessert eater but I was so looking forward to the advertised bread pudding with amaretto ice cream. Just like you said though, the subbed dessert was incredibly yummy. DC and I both got the mussles app and it was wonderful. Really perfect fat, fresh mussles. They use really quality ingredients and it showed.
