I was wondering if anyone knew where I could find stats on the number of restaurants pre-Katrina versus now? It seems like everytime I go back, there are 5-10 new places that I must try. Thank you for any help.

Tom Fitzmorris has 910 as the current number. There are listings on the site with phone numbers.

A quick google found this article from city business. It states that the pre-katrina number was 809.

Tom Fitzmorris is quoted, he runs nomenu.com.

A few weeks ago, I read an article that directly disputed Fitzmorris' numbers. It said that based on restaurant permits there were less restaurants than before the storm, and of course, Fitzmorris says there's more than before Katrina. However, for the life of me I can't find it. If I recall correctly, the article cited new orleans East and other hard hit areas as the reason for the deficit.

I just read his Fitzmorris's article, and he actually spoke about the discrepancy. He basically said that the permits include gas stations serving food, fast food, etc., whereas his were more focused on actual restaurants.

Yeah, but Fitzmorris' article is from April 30, 2007. The article I read was no more than a couple months ago. I'll do my best to find it, and I'll report a cite if I do. It might've been in the T.P.

According to Tom Fitzmorris:
910 Restaurants Now Open 809 Before The Hurricane.
"Not included: fast-food restaurants, most national chains, bars and coffeehouses."

There might be more, but with limited hours. For instance, Ye Olde College Inn used to be open for lunch every day, and brunch on Sundays. Now they are only open for dinner, Tues- Sat. I'm sure there are others with a similar situation. I'd like to see a similar comparison of how many resturants are open on Sunday and Monday, pre-K vs. today. And how many places close at 9pm, pre-K vs. today. I think this is an overlooked technicality.

I found a more recent article giving the stats I was referring to. According to the Louisiana Restaurant Association, the N.O. area is at 72% of pre katrina numbers. Alas, I trust the LRA a little more than Tom Fitzmorris when it comes to restaurant statistics.
