Looking for a really good one for a birthday on either the westside or near downtown L.A.

Not exactly what you are asking for but the Blue Velvet Cake at Milk is really good, expecially with their Blueberry Ice Cream!

Doughboy's makes a very good red velvet cake. They sell the individual size ones daily, but you can special order a larger cake. It's really moist and has a great cream cheese frosting.

I bought a co-worker a luscious red velvet cake at SusieCakes on San Vicente Blvd. in Brentwood:

You can get very good red velvet cake at Auntie Em's in Eagle Rock or cupcakes at Sprinkles in Beverly Hills. The Blue Velvet Cake at Milk is an eye-popper but stains teeth blue and, when I tried it, seemed a bit stale (maybe because they keep it in a cold case).

SusieCakes in Brentwood has my personal favorite.

Concur, this was gonna be my rec.

Buttercake Bakery on Pico is another good west la option.

The other place I tend to rec just in case you're near Studio City is Big Sugar Bakeshop. Good brownies too.

Hotcakes Bakes on Centinela and Washington in Culver City has really good red velvet with buttercream icing.
