afternoon tea?

my mother and aunt are coming to visit in a couple of weeks. one of the things we really want to do is have a nice afternoon tea. i'd like to go somewhere that has a great atmosphere. but, somewhere where we wouldn't have to dress up too much.

i'd also like for there to be a great selection of finger sammies and sweets.

any ideas?

  1. I had afternoon tea at the Atwood Cafe (about six months ago, so things may have changed): it was wonderful. Delicate yet delicious, we had a three-tiered stand filled with miniature scones and accompanying curds and preserves, three types of finger sandwiches, petite cookies, and a couple of other things I can't remember. Of course, the tea was also wonderful, and it was around $24/person. They serve tea from 2-4, and suggest reservations.

The Drake Hotel has been serving excellent afternoon teas for many years. See its web site:

I second the Atwood Cafe recommendation. My family has a annual/traditional Christmas tea get together and this is where we go. We have had tea at the Drake, and it was decent, but the Atwood slightly less expensive and we felt the food and tea was better.

The Atwood is nice and comfortable, and IMO not as formal feeling as having tea at the Drake.

You do have to call and make reservations.

      2. I do an annual tea event with clients and I have had tea at the Peninsula, Four Seasons, Ritz, Intercon and the Drake's is the best! You see lots of baby and bridal showers so some people are dressy and some aren't. They have the best scones and finger sandwiches.
