I want to take some college friends to dinner down in the LES near St. Marks or alphabet city on monday. All cuisines are welcome but they're not adventurous or enjoy complicated dishes so places like yakitori taisho are unfortunately out; and being college students they don't have very big wallets so lets keep it moderately priced. (no entrees much above $25.00 if possible). As for the atmosphere, I'm looking for something fun and funky, it'd be even better if it was kind of secluded, the whole walk down a dark stairway to find the best restaurant in NYC sort of sitaution. While that'd be fun, it's really not required, all I want is something that will be fun and possibly wow them in either food or atmosphere.

  1. Sounds like you're looking for Momofuku Ssam Bar (or the others). Most entrees range from high teens to mid twenties, the food is delicious and interesting without being out there with regard to less adventurous eaters, and the vibe is definitely fun and somewhat funky-ish. The only request it doesn't meet is secluded. You might want to get there early as the place fills up fast for dinner.
