We went to Il Vesco Vino on Selby Wednesday for happy hour. We sat at the bar. We thought that their drink and appetizer prices were a little high. We had martini's at $10.50 each. We tried their fried clams and their carpaccio. The carpaccio was good. The "quick fried crispy clams" seemed to be the prebreaded, frozen type. The clams were not very crispy and they were a little fishy. The bar tender was pleasant. Relaxing spot in the afternoon.

hey Mike, what kind of martinis did you order-- i would agree that $10.50 would be high for a well-pour gin martini, but if you were ordering sapphire or a higher-call martini, that's cheap! what were the happy hour specials, & did the specials affect the price of your drinks, food, or both?

Ketel One. They are $6.00 at Nye's and $7.50 at Jakes. Most places that we go to in the Twin Cities for happy hour have them at several dollars less each.

I must not be celebrating happy hours often enough, because it feels like I should know this. Anyway, here's the on-line menu's note for Il Vesco Vino's happy hour:

EARLY (Mon - Fri 4PM to 6PM) ~ LATE (Mon - Thur 9PM to 11PM)
* selected food items $3 off (kitchen closes at 10PM)
*$1 off - all tap beers
*$2 off - all quartinos
*$1 off - all well drinks

To me, a Ketel One martini doesn't quite sound like a well drink and so there would be no happy hour special. How about you all? Would you call it something different?

A Ketel One martini is definitely not a well call. Same martini at Morton's, Bank or Mission is $11 (IIRC) but the glass is larger than the one's at Nye's. (At least the Morton's glass.)

agree. i would expect to pay between $10 and $14 for a ketel martini in msp right now. more even, many places.

what are some happy hours that would include premium martinis?-- Mike mentioned nye's-- ooh another good one is saffron. they have a you-call-it martini happy hour, whatever you want for $6, *i think*-- their cocktail glass is smaller than both nye's and morton's though.

I did not say that Ketel one was a well pour. I did say that we pay much less for them at other places for the same pour. I have watched them being made at each place. We will pay $4.00 less per drink for the same drink and level of service any day. There is nothing special about the bar or the food at Il Vesco Vino to justify that price.

Right, you didn't. But that was exactly the question that I had: did "... on Wednesday for happy hour" have to do with the time of day or the available specials?

Others have clarified for me that IVV's happy hour specials do not include this drink, and readers should judge the $10.50 price with that in mind.

We were there since we were in the neighborhood. We just happened to be there during happy hour. We would have ordered the same drinks regardless of the time of day.

I drink "everynowandthen" at IVV and the deals are to be had on the wine side of the menu.

Can't say I've had the clams. The food has been excellent and not so good during the same meal.

Service has been consistently great! Looking forward to their summer patio and their new wood burning oven for pizzas.....

This is a bit of a threadjack I know, but a pp asked about premium martini happy hours and Pazzaluna has one that is good. Ketel One martinis or cosmos for 1/2 price from 4-6.
