We'll likely head to Port Dover soon - any suggestions for the area? (breakfast, lunch and dinner, pls)

  1. I would not call it gourmet by any stretch of the imagination, but when in Port Dover... The touristy thing to do is dine at the Erie Beach Hotel. Their perch dinner is a standard. The celery bread is to die for. There really is not much else in town other than usual fast food fare. I heard that that there is a fine dining establishment near the Lighthouse Theatre but friends who live in Port Dover don't give it very high marks.

Port Dover = Erie Beach perch. No contest. Shades of football games and summer nights!

Used to go to a place called 'Knechtal's' I think it was called. I loved it but that was 20 years ago and I was 12ish...

Knechtel's...that's the place you have to go to. Not the Erie Beach hotel. That is, if you're after perch, which you should be. Stuff's fairly expensive, though. But a worthwhile treat.

    2. And for fine dining, Port Dover-style, it's David's.

I was not aware of this restaurant. Judging from the map it is not in the "downtown' beach area but a further out on Lakeshore. Have you been? I had a look at the menu on the web site and it looks interesting. However, these prices seem really high for a town that is a beach resort that caters to the younger crowd and families. How long has it been open?

I haven't been. When I go to Dover, it's for the perch. Just giving a fine dining suggestions, Dover-style, to give the OP more options. Alternatively, there's a place called the Belworth in Waterford, which is about 30 minutes drive away. I've been there, it's pretty good and higher end. And in Simcoe, about 20 minutes away, they opened a Boston Pizza, which the locals are raving about. I'm kidding on the second suggestion.

went to port dover and based on this thread, we checked out the erie hotel for the perch.
Needless to say ..it was "good" but not amazing.
The celery bread was not as flavorful as I thought it would be..the french fries were basic....and the fish clearly was the winner!!

Should have gone to Knechtels. It's fast-food is, but the perch is great. Get it take out, with some tartar sauce, a spray of lemon and chow down on a picnic table.
