I'm curious -- why does this place get so little mention here? Honestly, the spot never even occurs to me when thinking about breakfast spots ... what am I missing?

Is it not as good as advertised (straightforward diner food done really well)? Is it just hovering beneath the radar? Do I need to make a field trip? Sign me, ready to take one for the team when it comes to diner breakfasts!!

This thread has got me thinking because of a post I just made over in the thread re the out of towner looking for Lebanese, Ethiopian, and Japanese places. Over there people were recommending Emily’s Lebanese Deli with caveat that it’s not really a destination place for someone visiting. I replied that it shouldn’t be discounted as a destination because some people (well, me anyway) like to go places that encourage exploring into neighborhoods. But I left it with the requirement that the food does of course have to be really good to make it worthwhile.

Now for Bandbox I’m stumped. The food here is nothing special. The fries especially are kind of pitiful and soggy, and I think if you’re a diner you should have unquestionable fries. But, it’s a neat little building. It’s not a neighborhood out of towners are likely to discover on their own. I think the laid back atmosphere is relaxing. And they usually seem to be listening to community radio. So despite the food not being great, it is the kind of place I’d tell a visitor to go.

I guess my internal check list of what makes a destination is more complicated than I thought.

We went once, probably as part of TCL's pancake hunt. What struck us was that the pancakes were really, really thin, and the grill so greasy that the pancakes were actually crispy on the outside.

I must wonder; was this seen as a good thing or a bad thing? Not sure about others, but a pancake cooked really hot on a griddle just having had bacon cooked on it is a guiltiest of guilty foods.

We didn't like it. The pancake was also really thin. So, it was more like a thick pancracker than thin pancake.

It wasn't even bacony, it was like they squirted a ton of oil on the grill before dropping the batter.

I love the Band Box Diner! I am new to the area and just getting my feet wet with the plethora of new restaurants to explore, but the Band Box is one of the few places I will frequent more than once. The food is greasy. Very greasy. I could seriously feel my cholestoral rising just walking into the small place.

Being a vegetarian, I was a little nervous ordering the veggie burger and watching the bacon-grease-filled grill in front of me. But, the cook deep fried my veggie burger without a special request. Anything deep fried is good. :) My husband, a meat eater, had a breakfast platter with scrambled eggs, sausage, toast, and american fries. We loved it all. He has also had a burger here on another visit and loved it.

The atmosphere is laid back and comfortable. Be prepared to wait; this is not fast food. The whole experience was fun and satisfying. The prices aren't bad either. I only wish they were open for dinner. :(

I went here years ago when I worked in the neighborhood. I hope the 'hood has turned around since then but back then it was a little scary.

I had the options available for a vegetarian at the time: grilled cheese and fries. The fries were from frozen, crinkle cuts, but they were cooked to perfection; not greasy, crisp on the outside and pillowy potato on the inside. The grilled cheese was wonderbread and processed cheese with a pickle chip toothpicked to the top.

We had a couple team meetings there (three people), and I stuck to the fries after the first time. Remember though this was a LONG time ago.

Is this the place in Elliot Park? If so, we drove by this recently and were very curious.

Has anyone that likes greasy/salty food had a chance to try it?

I thought the food at the Bandbox Diner was good, but not special enough to be worth going out of your way for. The seating area was not very comfortable, and the service was on the leisurely side.

I second the underwhelmed vote. More grease than real food.
