Santa Cruz 3/08; Cafe Brasil Best Breakfast
What a tremendous spot. Colorful, sunny, funky. Extensive menu with many unusual items.
Terrific Brazilian coffee, friendly easygoing positive people and atmosphere. Enormous portions. The Brazilian black beans on the Rancheros egg dish- were the best I have ever had in the U.S. (And I have eaten a LOT of black beans in my time!!). Lovely large blueberry muffins. Polenta is a neat option and my husband loved his, but because the polenta was plain, and not made with milk and /or cheese, I found them boring, though nice texture.
Oh, i almost forgot, some wonderful fresh fruit frappes and juices.
Thanks for your report back. How was the wait? The idea of waiting outside for a long time w/ the hoards of college students always deters me from going.
Just across the street is Vasili's Greek Taverna which I prefer for lunch. Dinner is not as much a good value, and the atmosphere is more "lunch" to me. Their lunch special is a great deal, and their pita and tzatziki are wonderful!
They are famous for their Acai Bowls. Have one in line while you wait for a table:
Frozen Acai "smoothie"
Strawberries and Bananas
So yummy, I started making them at home (they sell Samabazon Acai at Whole Foods, etc.) and am now addicted. Acai is a Brazilian Berry and considered a "superfood" with more anti-oxidants than Pomegranate. It the bowl gives me energy for my day.
