O Limequat, limequat, wherefore art thou limequat? (MSP)

Has anyone seen limequats recently in a Twin Cities grocery store? A limequat is a cross between a kumquat and a lime - it looks like a tiny yellow kumquat. The taste is unlike anything I've ever had before, and I love it!

I bought some limequats at my local co-op (Seward), back in early February, and I used them to make an amazing infused vodka. But this elixir is almost gone, and I really want some more.

Any limequat sightings would be welcomed. Kumquat reports would do as a back-up.

  1. i have never heard of a limequat. wow.

    the co-ops should be getting biodynamic kumquats and biodynamic yellow limes this week (seward should stock both i would think)

    um-- "a limequat, a limequat-- my kingdom for a limequat!" :-D

      1. I don't know squat about limequats...ha ha ha, oh I'm so funny....but Valley Natural Foods in Burnsville had kumquats last night.

        I'll keep my eyes peeled for limequats.

        1. Sounds terrific! No limequats, I'm afraid, but Mississippi Market on Randolph has Kumquats right now.

            I too have never before heard of limequats. Are you sure you didn't dream of
            these? But one of my favorite citrus fruits appeared at Fresh and Natural this
            week and may be at the coops- Royal Mandarin Oranges (organic). They have
            a sublime balance of sweet and acid, unlike any other fruit. Try some!

              If it was a dream, it was a very happy one! But wikipedia backs me up on this one (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limequat ).

              I checked back with the produce people at Seward co-op, who told me that limequats are no longer available. (The "big produce book" - their list of what they can order - doesn't have them any more.)

              Seward says they didn't sell many limequats in February, which is ENTIRELY my own fault - if only I'd known to buy all they had! Or it could have been the price - my 5 or 6 tiny limequats were about 75 cents each, but they were worth it.

              My limequat infused vodka is really lovely. I think it's because the skin is sweet, so the vodka doesn't get all bitter, like it does with regular citrus peel.

              But thanks for the kumquat reports! It seems that most co-ops have them right now, so I shall make a kumquat infused vodka to console myself for the end of my limequat infusion.

              And I shall drink it while meditating on the fleeting nature of all good things.

              P.S. Did you know that there are other kumquat crosses, like lemonquats, mandarinquats, and calamondins? Oh, the infusion possibilities!

                It looks like the limequat has a fairly short season, October to Feb. or so. There seem to be a lot of people in the south growing the trees and they often mention that they are similar to and confused with key limes. Maybe a key lime might be acceptable for your infused vodka? In any case I am certainly intrigued by the idea of a limequat!

                  I thought I was I going to get be helpful and tell you to head over to Seward, but I see that's where the whole thing started. And now I'm really disapointed because I kept putting off buying a couple to try and missed my chance. I hope Seward doesn't consider this a lesson learned and will still try them again next year.

                    Just a comment about the bitterness you mention, Anne. If one is careful to use just the citrus' zest and not include any bit of the white pith, the resulting infusion will also be lovely. I make limoncello periodically and found out that "secret" early on. The alcohol used, and its quality, is also a factor, but that's another post.
