Fujimama's on the Big Island
We recently had an fine dining experience at this small restaurant just mauka of Alii Drive in donwtown Kailua-Kona. The pupus made for a superior starting point with an excellent selection of sushi. We elected the Yomama roll (an excellent combination of seafood and veggies exceptionally well spiced), the always steady choice of tobiko nigiri (crunchy fish eggs on a bed of rice wrapped in seaweed seated in a shoyu/wasabi sause), and an order of lightly fried calamari strips so thinly massaged that they melted in your mouth. We follow those with entrees including a succulent lamb sate which was outstanding with a bed of pickled vegetables, a lightly corn-crusted Walu (Hawaiian Butterfish) served on a bed of sauted greens and brown rice (it was so smooth and sweet), and a five-spice pork yakisoba that provided an excellent kick to offset the sweet Walu. We topped off the evening with a cup of fine Kona coffee and shared a desert of Bananas Tempura with locally made Tahitian vanilla ice cream. We will definately return.
While this is not a place for a a traveler on a budget, it was truely a fine dining experience with excellent service and reasonable ambiance.
I should mention that this place has an awesome martini selection with a wide range of exotic concoctions. Our next visit will be to sample more of their sushi roll selection while sipping a giant Sapporo beer or a fine martini.
We hope that your dining experience here will be a fine as ours.
