Low-sugar cocktail options?

A friend just got the doctor's advice to cut back on sugar, and is seeking low-sugar spirits and mixer options. Ideas?

Making simple syrup with an artificial sweetener would probably work well instead of the normal sugar. Other than that, stick with drinks that contain liquors intead of liqueurs.

My standard is always a citron (have to careful on some flavored vodkas, since some have added flavoring which contains sugar) and soda with a lemon squeeze - not lately on the lemon, I don't want to support the ridiculous lemon prices, 69 cents here...blasphemy!! Standard soda water only has a small dose of sodium, but I'm not sure the actual sugar content of vodka. Lately I have ventured into gin/sodas, gin gives the drink a herbal quality. Juice, soda, and liqueurs are just a sugar nightmare.

I had a customer one time that ordered his alcohol with iced tea, sometimes he would add an artificial sweetener as well.

What did the doctor say about the consumption of alcohol? I recently was advised to cut out all sweets (except whole fruit) and all alcohol.
