Portland, ME, weekend rec's

Ambrose328 Mar 10, 2008 08:00 AM

A few friends and I will be spending this weekend (mar 14-16) in Portland... are there any lobster shack recommendations that are open this time of year, and also any recommendations for dining generally? All the posts I've found revolve around fine dining, and we're more of the "whole-in-the-wall/off-of-the-boat" type foodies. thanks!

Try any of Norm's establishments (East End Grill, Bar & Grill) and The Porthole (a somewhat cleaned up wharfside dive--great local color) serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Gilbert's Chowderhouse will serve you on paper plates. Their seafood is fried, and the chowder is thickened, if you are of that persuasion.

I recommend J's Oyster, located downtown off Commercial Street. Also, try Morrisons Chowder House, on Temple Street. Both have excellent lobster rolls. I cannot think of any open lobster shacks, on the water, in the Portland area but if you are driving up to Portland from the south, Bob's Clam Hut in Kittery is open.
