extraordinary key lime pie?

I like the key lime at Houston's in Irvine (no other locations). Any other recs for key lime or other tart and tangy desserts around LA?

perhaps from the Key Lime Guy? :)

Thanks in advance.

  1. If you can't find it in LA, you could always order it directly from Joe's Stone Crab in Miami -- it is a classic. To borrow someone's description (Zagat?) "Key lime pie so good it tastes like they invented it there."

    1. I live it Newport and Houston's is not far. The best Key Lime Pie I can remember recently is MORTON'S, not Joe's.

      1. Although flattery WILL get you everywhere :) ...

I'm afraid this dumb nickname isn't indicative of a true obsession or any specialized knowledge.

I would hesitantly recommend Border Grill, but it's been a while and I probably haven't been to the better high-end dessert places. (On second thought, strike "probably")

I'm eager to hear other opinions too.

        1. My mother swears by the key lime pie at Polly's in Santa Monica (on Wilshire). The restaurant isn't all that great but she'll make a special trip just to buy a pie . . . or two.

          1. I've had two in the past year that were good. The first is at Marmalade in Malibu; unsual in that it has a graham cracker crust. The other, and best, was at the Palace Café in Santa Barbara. Just the right amount of tart v. sweet. Both were enough to share with at least one other person.

            1. I've had good key lime pie at The Ivy, but it's been a while. Of course, lots of smaller places sub out their desserts so you never know if you'll get the same experience.
