Lolo: Such Divergent Opinions; What's Your Take on It?

Boston Ch coming tomorrow for annual SF visit. Maybe adding Lolo to favorites Aziza, Cortez, Foreign Cinema for dinners (also maybe Coi). Anyway, of the maybe 50 reviews on, LoLo gets more differing opinions- adjacent to each other no less- than any I have ever seen. Looks like if we went we would either:1) Love it or 2) "meh" and resent it.
Help!! If you have eaten there, tell me what you thought of it plse!! Thanks v. much.

I like the place. The interior is weird in an awesome way. I like the food quite a bit, but it's not earth shattering. EVERY place gets mixed reviews, even internationally known and beloved places, such as Zuni, Delfina, Chez Panisse. Wildly mixed reviews. You have to take a certain leap of faith here!

If you want a whole slew of additional opinions, I suggest looking at the Lolo entry on Yelp.

atomica, thanks, but expand my comments and you'll see that the wildly divergent yelp reviews are what prompted my CH reequest for commentrs!!
you're the first CH to respond who has actually EATEN at Lolo!! so th you.

i liked it a lot. the fish taco app was the best thing. i think i enjoyed it for solid (not outstanding) food but really, the fun funky ambiance, decor and really unique food (mix of mexican and turkish, IIRC) which worked for me (not weird fusion for the sake of fusion). it reminded me a bit of orinoco if you are familiar w/that restaurant (not as good a value as orinoco but that's is s different style of food)

8 people already responded with reports in the link Robert Lauriston provided you above. I went twice, and responded in that thread. I liked it, especially the jicama tacos.

          3. I found the food very interestingly conceived, not always well executed. The jicama and shrimp tacos people have been talking about are totally unique and pretty brilliant. The thinly sliced jicama becomes the tortilla, which imparts a totally new texture and freshness to a taco. Really yummy.

But on my (one of and only) visit, I ordered the steak with a strawberry mole, which was a big mistake. The steak was fairly flavorless and overcooked, the mole was wayyyy too acidic. Oh, and the accompanying fries (thinner than shoestring, but not as thin as matchstick) were greasy and limp. I took it as my mistake for ordering something so pedestrian at such a place.

I don't resent Lolo. I walked in expecting a hipster "too cool for school" vibe but totally didn't get it -- everyone was really nice and the place felt very comfy. Is it a destination place for someone coming across town? Perhaps...across North America? Not so much.
