Best way to crush oreos
Hi all,
What's the best, no-fuss way to crush oreos. It takes way too long for me in the blender and I can only do about 10 at a time in there, I have to empty it out, and do 10 more. Crushing in a Zip Lock bag with a rolling pin, the bag will always break on me. Are there Zip Lock bags stronger than the freezer bags?
Just looking to see if anyone has tips or tricks. Thanks.

Blenders are for, well, blending. Food processors are for doing the heavier chores. I've used several methods for crushing Oreos (and other ingredients)
1. Linen towel doubled with the ingredients to be crushed placed between the folds and a rolling pin or smooth faced meat tenderizer
2. Plastic bag (heavier the better) with similar instruments. Finding a bag heavy enough to prevent crumb leakage is a real problem here though.
3. Baking sheet where ingredients are distributed and a wooden potato masher or rolling pin used to crush them by pressing rather than pounding.
Currently, I use the food processor. I don't like using the coffee grinder as it tends to make more dust than crumbs. -

I've never crushed oreos, but it seems to me they would crush more uniformly if you refrigerated or even froze them first.

I freeze my chocolate before I smash it to make chocolate chunks so why not Oreos. Hmm, now that I think about it, smashing technique might work for Oreos, too.
I haven't done this with them so take it with a grain of salt: Put the cookies in a ziploc bag (hang in with me here). Don't just stuff them in, lay them out flat in a single layer. Put that on a cutting board and get out a hammer. Whack each single cookie. Might take one whack, might take more. By whacking each flat cookie, it should save wear and tear on the bag.
That's the theory, anyway. Whacking with a hammer works great on frozen chocolate bars.

You'd think, but it doesn't. In the food processor it comes out just crumbs, albeit moist crumbs. I've only ever made the Oreo truffles with them. The crumbs get cream cheese added, so that binds them. I don't know if you could use the crushed cookies just with their cream filling for a pie crust or whether you'd have to add some melted butter. Someone will chime in.

I crush them with the filling. The recipe calls for mixing with melted butter. It's Kraft's Striped Delight recipe:
http://www.kraftfoods.com/kf/recipes/... IDefinitely a crowd pleaser as it is since 99% sadly just care about taste. I personally don't like it. Lately I've been refining it by using real whip cream instead of Cool Whip. I haven't perfected homemade chocolate pudding yet, but (hopefully) soon Oreos will be the only part of the ingredients that aren't homemade. I tried a homemade "Oreo" recipe once and it wasn't even close.

Instead of using a Ziplock or other plastic bag, use one of those large FedEx envelopes.
They are made of a synthetic paper/plastic combo that is very resilient and holds up well to constant mashing by a rolling pin.
Never had a tear, or a rupture ... even when I've used a rubber mallet to do the crushing.
