After reading about Clover coffee on the LA board, I decided to try to find the closest available clover coffee machine. Lo and behold, there is one at Goodwin's Organics in Riverside, near UCR. I ventured over to find a newly opened Organic grocery store and cafe, and I'm so happy that Riverside has such a place.

The guys working there are oh-so-happy to tell you all about the different brews (not in a pretentious way), and so far, I've tried a Brazilian and a limited-supply Ethiopian Aritra #7 that has hints of blueberries and a lemony finish. Really fantastic.

The place just opened, so there are a few kinks in the layout to be worked out. Coffee/tea is on one side of the store, sandwiches, whole-wheat pizza by the slice, and salad bar/soup/steel-cut oats are on the other. There is a VERY small sitting area in the coffee area, but the actual lounge is upstairs. So, I paid a $25 membership for the year and take my coffee or pizza (about $2.70/8 inches--just tell them how much to cut) upstairs to a balcony that overlooks the hills behind UCR (nice while it's green) or into the lounge area that has a fireplace and TV. The lounge area is nice but a little sterile--it definitely needs better music (or no music) but has a lot of potential.

Anyway, I'm really excited to have such a place in Riverside.

Wow. I wondered if this was new. I just happened to glance at the Clover map (http://cloverequipment.com/find_a_clover.aspx) and noticed this place. Do you know whose coffee they use? Is it their own or do they get it from someone else? And what are they charging for a cup?

I *think* it's their own, but I'm not sure. The Brazilian that I had was two dollars, and I believe the Sumatra is two dollars. The Panamanian may be three dollars, however, the Ethiopian Aritra #7 was seven dollars. It was two cups, though, and you could specify the temp of each (207 degrees or 210 degrees are recommended, but on one visit he accidentally did it at 208 degrees, so I got 3 cups). He pointed out that it was called #7 b/c there were seven buyers which is sort of what I'm basing my thought that it's their coffee on. So, I make no promises there, but I'll check this weekend.

I may be wrong but I believe coffee bars that use a Clover machine buy special small-lot coffees at auction, hence the varying menus and prices. They may have a few house coffee brands, but the local one seems to encourage trying the small-lot coffees.

Wow. I'm excited to go try out Goodwin's. By the way, did they spell it Aritra? I know that Novo coffee has an Aricha #7 and I'm curious if this is the same one (http://www.novocoffee.com/).

And did you notice much of a difference between the 208 and 210 cups? There's a great article on slate on the clover that talks about this point. Just search for clover on slate - there's also a link to it on my blog.

Toodie, yeah, the prices for clover generally range a bit, depending on the coffee. It's great. The cafes can actually afford to make you a cup of their $35/pound micro-lot coffee since they wouldn't want to brew it up in a large pot (both bad for the quality and the wastefulness factor). $7 is pretty high though. The only one I've had that high was the non-auction lot of Esmerelda Geisha from Novo which ran around $50 something dollars a pound. Typically, the prices for a clover cup that I've seen are from a little more than $2 to upwards of $6.

You're correct--it was Aricha #7. So, ultimately we tried it at 207, 208, 210, and there's a surprising (at least to me) amount of difference between the three. The 207 was by far the most citrus-y and the 210 by far the most chocolate-y. The 208 really was just a blend of the two that was definitely different than both the others.

The $7 was steep, however since we got two cups, we justified it to ourselves. Since then, I've just paid the $2 for the Brazilian (my favorite other than the Aricha) or Sumatran.

I hope you like it!
