L.A.'s best smoked salmon?

I've always headed straight for Barney Greengrass. Am I missing something?

  1. Barney Greengrass is excellent.

    It's probably not exactly what you mean, but the smoked salmon sushi or sashimi at Kiriko is phenomenal. It's lightly smoked, in-house. It comes either as sushi, sashimi, or wrapped around mango slices (with or without caviar added).

      I strongly second this! Really some of the best smoked salmon I've ever tasted. When they have it, the house smoked salmon at Orris is lovely too.

        strongly thirded! i had lightly smoked copper salmon, wrapped around mango, and topped with a small dollop of creme fraiche and a little bit of caviar. one of the most delicious things i've ever eaten.

    2. You certainly can't go wrong with Barney Greengrass, but it is extremely expensive, as I recall. Since BH is too far for me to go to buy smoked salmon, I always look for Michel Cordon Bleu, by chef Michel Blanchet, formerly of L'Ermitage restaurant, for those of you who remember the 1980s in LA. The salmon is prepackaged, sliced, on distinctive gold metallic stock. Larchmont Wine & Cheese carries it, although they are often out of stock, and I believe Surfa's in Culver City does as well. It's the best I've found. I haven't done a side-by-side with Barney Greengrass, but maybe another Chowperson has.

          Took the words right out of my keyboard. Michel's Salmon is great and served in many restaurants nationwide.

            Well, we all know where to get hand cut pastrami, right? Growing up in the City (NY), the smoked salmon ("lox") was invariably hand sliced to order ad carefully stacked on wax paper, whether at the corner "appetizer" store or an expanded deli like Zabar's. Hand slicing was an art akin to that of a deft sushi chef. And the wide variety (and prices) of salmons at Zabar's was mind boggling. Packaged or even pre-sliced, if you could find it, was relegated to tasteless boobs and emergency buys.

            So forgive me if I wax nostalgic, but where's the best place in LA to get quality smoked salmon delicately and lovingly hand sliced to order?

        2. Petrossian on Robertson is known mostly for fabulous caviar, but their smoked fish is also out of this world.

            It's been a while since I've been but Marve's deli on Magnolia in Valley Village might be your ticket. Call them to see if they are still hand cutting (818) 763-0616. No ambiance, very few seats but they guys there know what they are doing.
