We're doing a day trip of the Foxen Canyon Wineries, departing from Lompoc. I'm looking for a great market in the Buellton area where we can pick up all the goodies we need for a picnic at one of the wineries. I was trying to avoid going into Solvang if I could. Can anyone recommend any place?

Well....Lompoc and Buellton both have a Albertsons- that can basically fufill your needs.

If you are looking for more than that, I reccomend that you get a coffee on the 100 block of South H and drive the 246 to Buellton, take the 101 North- take the 154 exit and pass the Zaca Station Rd (at this point- you have been traveling about 30 minutes) and drive to Los Olivos Grocery and stock up. To get to, say Fess Parker from Los Olivos Grocery would take about 10 minutes, so it isn't that far out of your way. This is all very easy to find on a local map.

Los Olivos Grocery has everything your money can possibly think of. Great breads, cheese (they have recently expanded their cheese offerings- if you can believe that), chocolate, excellent deli goods, waters, maps, fruit...You could spend $100.00 on cheese and crackers if you really tried hard here.

El Rancho on 246 (which would require a drive thru Solvang) has a new Sushi deli- where you could pick up pre-packaged sushi- if kept in cooler on ice packs, I'd think it would be fine for up to 2 hours- it is fairly priced and very good. The deli here is unbelievable, though most is hot foods. Great cheeses also, great breads and excellent coffee bar here.

Buellton Marriot has Starbucks coffee bar available to all.

You should be able to leave Lompoc at 8:45 and be at the first tasting room at 10am no problem.

If you chose to stock up at Albertsons (and why wouldn't you?) another way to get to Foxen Canyon (albeit a rather crazy backroads type of way) would be take the 246 East, take a right on Drum Canyon and go up this country road- up and over a small mountain and end up in Los Alamos- get onto Southbound 101 and in 3 minutes there is Alisos Canyon Road- take a right and this will get you to Foxen Canyon in about 10 minutes it will land you on Foxen Canyon between Foxen (to the North) and Zaca Mesa (to the South). This, from Lompoc, would take about 45 minutes to get you to one of these wineries. Might be a nice way to get back to Lompoc?

It is so green and lovely right now, please take the slow roads to enjoy the scenery!!!

2nd on the Drum Cyn route--you can ride the freeways at home. Also you can check out American Flatbread in downtown Los Alamos for possible Sat lunch or dinner of wood-fired thin crust pizza. m-m-m-m-.

We have had to take a break on American Flatbread- we were going far too often!! Nothing beats a great table of pizzas, great wine and upon leaving, a beautiful sunset. The smore dessert is unbeatable.

Heard there was a new Chef there- a lady named Kristen.
