Pittsburgh Pho/Vietnamese

Hello,

I will be moving to the Pittsburgh area soon, close to the Waterfront. I have read many of the posts in here, but have not heard much about Vietnamese. I did read the article in the PG that was written not too long ago, but wanted to hear from local chowhounds about their favorite Vietnamese. In particular, I really am looking for some excellent pho and fresh spring/jicama rolls.

Thanks

Me Lyng, 213 W 8th Ave in Homestead serves Vietnamese that I've enjoyed though not everyone agrees, but still nice to have something close to you.

Seems like the most agreed upon good place is Tram's Kitchen.

Thanks Rick. Yes, I have heard many people recommend Tram's, and I will definitely try it. I am very particular on my pho, and have learned to make it well over the years, but it does required a lot of time and prep. I have heard many people say that Me Lyng is very good, but I was uncertain about the authenticity of their Vietnamese dishes. I am glad that they are very close to me, though.

Forgot about Pho 88 on Route 88, their pho is pretty good too. To be honest though I'm not sure you'll fall in love with any pho in Pittsburgh as I haven't found anything to be excellent, all just good. I work very close to the Waterfront and Me Lyng is a nice lunch spot, I usually order the ginger chicken.

Thanks a lot, Rick. i will try out Pho 88 if I am in that area, and if the ones downtown are not to my liking. I will definitely try the ginger chicken at Me Lyng, based on your review.

Tram's is a must try, but I fear it has slipped a bit over past few years. If nothing else perhaps inconsistent. It is indeed funky as the oil cloth tablecoverings may have pictures or roosters or cowboys and indians!!!
The father, who runs the front is very bright and can be extremely charming and funny or if busy will be quite serious and come across rude. Don't be intimidated just relax and enjoy the show. You might want to plan going at an off hour your first time, like 3:00 PM Sat afternoon! Great Iced Coffee. We get the "veggie" soup options as well as veggie spring rolls. Everything is made to order so don't be in a hurry.
