Chinese markets in Chinatown (DC) - Not NoVA/MD

Cocinero Cubano Mar 6, 2008 07:36 AM

There are some Chinese (Sichuan) recipes for which I've had no luck finding some ingredients at the Asian markets in Fairfax, Annandale, and Arlington.

I'm not too familiar with Chinatown, so I'm looking for recommendations for any good markets that have a good supply of oils and especially spices. I need to find Sichuan peppercorns; my supply is running low.

Thanks.

The short answer is that there aren't any good Chinese markets in DC-proper. Indeed, I'm not certain there are any, though you may be able to find Sichuan peppercorns at other groceries in DC. Otherwise, you can order them online from any number of places. Or, bite the bullet and head for the 'burbs.

Kam San in Annandale (Markham Place, same plaza as A&J) has your Sichuan peppercorns and they have a fairly extensive selection of oils and sauces. But I think the Sichuan peppercorns from Penzeys (Falls Church) were more intense.

Great Wall in Merrifield is a much larger Chinese grocery. It's the size of a full size US grocery store. I have not looked for Sichuan peppercorns there, but they almost certainly have them, plus your oils.
