Wondering if it is any good...

  1. I tried it. I can do the whole vaguely prune flavored and cherry thing, butt the tang of the artifical chocolate flavor was just over the top for me. It adds a strange note. It's not bitter, but something I can't put my finger on it. I suspect this is something people will either LOVE, or hate.

OH MY GOSH!!! All these years I've never been able to quite put my finger on the taste of DP. Yep, it's a hint of prune!! Great scott (err...nliedel) I think you've got it!!

re op: that sounds wrong enough on papar not to warant a taste-test!

        1. re: enbell

Haven't you ever heard the urban legend about Dr.Pepper being carbonated prune juice?

          1. re: shellsbutt

Geez-no! Does everyone kind of know that be me?!

            1. re: shellsbutt

it was created as a health drink by a dr. pepper, i was told.

            2. re: enbell

May have to move this to spirits but you can try it in a drink I invented years ago. Vodka and prune juice. Call it a PILE DRIVER.

          2. i'm sorry, this just seems like a terrible idea.

sort of like pepsi jazz :/

            1. I'll probably try it, but I'm so fed up with this diversifying of Dr. Pepper. Dr. Pepper(the original) is my favorite soda and nowadays it's more and more difficult to find at my local stores because they feel the need to carry all the flavored varieties in regular and diet. Sigh.

              1. I tried it. It's ok. I won't buy it again as there are other flavors I like much better, like Cherry Coke Zero.

I remember flying a lot in the 90's, and whenever I got the generic "Beverage?" question from the flight attendants, I used to request "Caffeine-free Diet Cherry Coke". This usually resulted in a momentarily befuddled look before a halting reply of "Uh, we don't have it on this flight".

                  1. re: GenieinTX

Much prefer cherry vanilla dr pepper and cherry coke zero to dr pepper diet choc cherry. I don't like that fake chocolate flavor at all.

Didn't another soda brand try this flavor before? Anyone else remember trying it back in the 80's/early 90's?

                  2. I tried it and didn't think it was bad...tasted kind of like a cherry tootsie roll pop....you kind of just have to enjoy it for the novelty and definitely not expect a refreshing drink.

                    1. re: shellicopter

That is exactly what I thought it tasted like. I'd prefer to eat a cherry tootsie roll pop than drink one.

                    2. It was pretty awful. My friends and I have a love all all things new in soda, and this stuff? We were all turned off.

                      1. I thought it was really awful, and dumped it after 3 sips.

                        1. I like most every soda..and am especially forgiving if its diet...but this stuff...YUCK. My dad bought 2 cases on a whim. Thats 8 completely wasted dollars in my opinion. At first sip, the dr pepper and cherry taste hits you....not too bad...perhaps a little articifical tasting and sweet, but hey, if you were against artificial sweetner, you wouldnt have pooped the tab in the first place. Then, as you swallow, the chocolate hits you. My first thought was "gee this tastes like a chocolate tootsie roll pop". Now i like the choco pops. but the pop is full of crunchy, chewy, sugary goodness. but this? Imagine liquifying it. and taking out the things that make it great and to add insult to injury make it fake sugar. whats left??? It was just too over the top artificial for me. I tried to like it. I really did. I spend too much in diet coke as it is and if i didnt have to buy any for 2 weeks, hey thats 8 dollars saved to me. but I couldnt do it. haha my dad has to now figure out how to get rid of 23 cans of this vile stuff. i told him not to do it...

                          1. I liked it and so did my husband.

                            1. It was okay. I told my mom about it. I think it tasted like a cheap chocolate-covered cherry. I won't be having it again any time soon, though. I've recently given up caffeine and artificial sweeteners.

                              1. where can you buy this? i need to try it!

I agree. I love testing out new flavors, and generally drink diet. Love the other diet dr. pepper varieties with vanilla or cherry etc. But this was just horrid. Do not want!

                                  2. I'm not too fond of it. It reminds me of Faygo chocolate drinks from the seventies. Best to pass.

                                    1. try canfield's diet chocolate fudge soda.

i used to blenderize it with ice and vanilla alba '77 for a low fat, low-cal shake.

looks like there may be a cherry chocolate version, too.

                                      1. It was gross. Went to a gas station that had no other Dr Pepper (the only soda I will drink.) So, thought I'd give it a whirl.
Tasted like chocolate cherry Nyquil. Couldn't take more than a sip. Same as my boyfriend, who also loves Dr Pepper.

ab, that was truly an evocative word picture, er....taste. word taste.
i imagined blending choco-covered cherries in a bottle of green nyquil.

                                          1. re: Azizeh Barjesteh

Yes, I tried it and thought it tasted like cherry cough syrup. And I too love Dr. Pepper. I couldn't drink this one, though.

                                          2. I think it's not bad, my mom loves it. She can drink it with dinner, I have to drink it after or without a meal.

                                            1. We became hooked on Cherry Chocolate Diet Dr. Pepper (purchased at local Wal-Mart in Springdale, AR). None of the Wal-Marts (or other stores in our area) appear to carry it anymore. We are chocoholics and want to spare the calories. We can accommodate to variations in the pure taste one expects from either chocolate or cherry. I hope their resurrect it.

                                              1. i have not tried it, however this past week i braised some pork ribs in dr pepper with some fresh cherries and then added that braising liquid into the bbq sauce. it was really good

                                                1. Not sure if someone on thread mentioned, but tastes like a Tootsie Roll.

Probably my favorite soda ever made.

                                                  1. Must not be doing too well, they had some at the 99 Cent Store about a month ago. I like chocolate covered cherries and don't taste artificial sweeteners, so it was okay.

                                                    1. Is there any, ANY chocolate soda out there that isn't chemically-sweetened diet stuff?

                                                        canfield's chocolate soda! http://www.epinions.com/reviews/Fudge...

and their diet chocolate soda is good to mix with "alba" to make a diet shake that is thick and delicious -- esp. with a touch of vanilla extract added in. http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&...

                                                        1. re: alkapal

I haven't tried it yet but it sounds really good.

                                                          1. re: alkapal

That Canfield's url is a review of their diet (eeerrrk!!) soda. I'm looking for regular chocolate soda, unpolluted by faux sweeteners. This type of product does not seem to exist.

The Alba product description contains the dreaded word "Splenda". Artificial sweeteners are a total deal breaker for me.

                                                            1. re: Sharuf

yes sharuf, but canfields makes a regular chocolate soda, iirc. sorry i pasted wrong link.

while the chocolate soda you seek does not have artificial sweeteners, a "soda" will definitely have artificial flavoring.

and chowindown, the best flavor to use of the alba is vanilla, blended with the canfield's diet chocolate soda. it seems more like a traditional chocolate shake than using the chocolate alba. but for so few calories, experiment! good calcium source, too.

                                                              1. re: alkapal

If Canfield's makes a naturally-sweetened chocolate soda, I can't find mention of it. If ANYBODY does, all my googling hasn't turned up a reference to it. (sigh!)

                                                                1. re: Sharuf
