New(ish) Indian in Mt. View

Got a tip on a better than average Indian restaurant on El Camino in Mountain View. In some respects, Shabnum Chat, Sweets & Bistro (guess they don't want to miss anything) stands out in the South Bay's crowded Indian food sector. Located in the same location as the short lived Aromas, and conveniently situated next to one of the pleasant and usually well stocked Namaste Plaza markets, Shabnum is run by a bunch of friendly and attentive folks. Surroundings are clean and the decor is pleasant and low key. On to the food…

I've been twice so far, once for dinner and once for lunch. Both times, we hit the buffet and everyone went home happy. My last visit, on 03-1-08, was great. Yes, Amber is more refined and Passage has different choices but, overall, the food was well made and diverse. Some of the items at the lunch buffet; veggie samosas & aloo tikka, tandoori & butter chicken, lamb rogan josh & an outstanding goat "special," shahi & saag paneer, chana masala and anoth stand out, their dal makhani. You get a choice of plain or garlic naan, the chai masala flows freely and, for dessert, a quadruple threat of gulab jamun, kheer, cashew barfi and mango/strawberry softserve. Yikes!

Unless I'm mistaken, this massive spread was $6.95, which is well worth the shekels. So, git yer hungry self over to this joint and give it a try. Methinks you'll like it as well.

Thanks for the report. I am usually at Namaste Plaza once a month so how can I pass up a $6.95 buffet that includes "goat special" ?
